Really depends how Vegas decides to use this expansion draft. They have a real opportunity to start with a much better team than any expansion team. I think 5 years or less is absolutely possible. But if they go for picks instead of taking the best player available I would imagine 5 years minimum and a ton of luck since picks are so unpredictable when or if they turn out.

Make a solid team right off the bat with as much depth as you can and do your best to draw FA... Thats your best bet for quicker playoffs. The Pacific overall has lost its power houses and is wide open. If Vegas makes its own division and conference significantly better now they honestly might create a hole they wont get out of for a decade.

they will probbably have a starting goalie better then half of the league's starting goalies, and 2 top 4 d, that really isnt that bad for a first year.

In less than 5 seasons there will be talk of moving the team out of Vegas after the novelty has worn off. Another Bettman failure. But I'm sure Bettman will find a way to get the Golden Showers in the playoffs sooner rather than later to pump the owners tires.

The Senators will move before VGN. They can't even sell out game 6 of an ECF. At least Vegas has the sense to put the arena downtown and not on the outskirts of the city.

That is a path for quicker playoffs, but hitting in the draft is the best bet for consistent contention. And of course, it's easier to hit if you're drafting high.

I would think McPhee wants to follow the patient Nashville-like approach more, but Foley will probably want otherwise. That may become an interesting tug-of-war down the line.

Shades of Vanbiesbrouck and Puppa! Yea, they certainly shouldn't be Sens/Sharks bad in their expansion year.

I live in Calgary and I don't even want a new arena. It's just an example of corporate welfare. Those idiots in Edmonton can't even have a smoke during intermission and come back. I'm happy with the Saddledome.

If playoff ticket prices were realistic in Ottawa they would have no issues. They will need to adjust it. Can't see the Sens moving regardless the building was built with 3000 too many seats anyway.

Was just in Vegas last week and I have to say as of right now there is zero interest in the NHL franchise there and I mean zero. No promos in the casinos or basically anywhere. Even the merchandising shop at the Arena was closed!! And they are going to have massive transit issues to an from that downtown Arena as well with all the bottle-necking down there by the Monte Carlo.

I'll give it 5 years and they will be bleeding 20-40 mil per year just like ARZ. But like anything Bettman will 'make it work'

I still don't mind the Saddledome either. But you have to admit the building is aging and there is more damage to that place from the flood than they would care to admit. It's a foregone conclusion you need a new building in Calgary…gotta out do EDM!!

Probably 3-4 years.

They are going to take on salaries for draft picks and take guys they can move at the deadline for more picks. They will have the chance to do something similar to Toronto if the fan base is patient.

If they play their cards right they will end up with 8 picks in the first two rounds over the next two seasons.

I was a about 14 when the Canucks entered the league and there was really not much minor hockey in the lower mainland at that point. I know, because I played a lot and our New Westminster midget A team went to the BC final four. The recreational hockey base in Las Vegas is actually pretty decent with SLC, Az and SoCal all close by. Moreover, the base of hockey fans from all over NA and the world in Vegas at any one time has to be quite large. As for the rink traffic flow negative Nancy's , probably without any improvements in traffic flow whatsoever that city handles large flows of people better than any building we have been and my wife and I have seen games in about 3/4 of the NHL rinks. Sorry fellow Canadians, you can't have the NHL all to your selves! We sun belt areas actually do really love the game and I can tell you that there already is a very strong wave of enthusiastic fans and growing larger every year. Looks to me like the stars are aligning vey nicely for Vegas. I am super stoked to be committed to awesome season tickets for at least the next 5 full seasons.
I think year 4 the VGN will be in the playoffs and make it into round two. Get use to it, we are legit hockey fans down here.

I saw games in Chicago when there were plenty of empty seats not too many years ago. You have already started your slide.
New York Strangers, NOW those are some REEL hockey fans. And I mean reel, fish lips.
Vegas will be just fine and we will have the next cup before you both
