By CapFriendly, Montour is exempt for the expansion draft. Same thing for Shea Theodore. |

Really depends on Vegas strat. Scorched earth, like the Oilers and others did, has proven to be a bit too hit and miss. Or time consuming. I dont think Vegas wants to wait more than 5 years to field a competitive team. Especially with the new draft rules scorched earth is a bad way to go.
If I were Vegas I wouldn't be trading players for picks/lotto tickets. I would build the best team ASAP.
Deals you describe would be highly unlikely, especially towards divisional rivals.
Being an embarrassing team for any length of time is probably bad for business. Vegs will also have the NFL to complete with for sports fans. A established relocated NFL team. |

It's not all that tough of a situation for Anaheim. Trade one of Vatanen or Fowler to a team that needs a Dman and has space (Tampa, for example) and Bieksa could likely be convinced to waive by promising him another contract after his current one expires- which he likely won't get otherwise.
The team that needs to be worried is Minnesota who have 5 Dmen who ideally would be protected and Zucker, Coyle, Niedereitter, Granlund, Koivu (NMC), Staal, Pominville (NMC) and Parise (NMC) to be protected and only Pominville who could likely be convinced to waive. |

Most of the league is looking to take advantage of the two or three teams who will lose a quality player, and those teams are just as likely to give Vegas something to keep those players as any other team is to acquire them. Kind of a pipe dream to expect to benefit from the situation in MN or ANA.
Edmonton's expansion "problems" are more from the part of the rules this blog skipped over. You have to expose 2 forwards & a defenseman under contract for next year who played 40+ games this year, or 70+ games in the last 2 years combined. Fayne and Pouliot cover some of that, but unless I'm missing someone else, Oilers need to re-sign someone else they don't care about to expose. Not a huge deal, but does mean a contract for someone like Desharnais or Hendricks, unlikely to be selected thus Oilers likely to be stuck with next year. Great "problem" to have. |

Pakarinen was re-signed earlier in the week. "Problem" solved. |

Just be happy he wrote a new blog so you don't have to keep scrolling to the bottom of the HB homepage to find the oilers thread. |

poop. Was really hoping for Ottawa. Feel like it would have been a lot easier than Pittsburgh in the Finals for Nashville. |
