I like him. The return would never be worth what he's worth. And then we're looking to fill the hole he'll have left. Imagine the production he'd have had if he had a sniff of the first unit pp. If they can keep him to $6 mill or less...go for it. The guy's still only 25...and can play on any line!! He towed the line last season...

He was there the entire time Okposo was hurt.

He's not a great PP player, he's better scorer 5 on 5. Which in general is more important.......right homie?

40 percent 5 on 5
20 percent power play
20 percent penalty kill
20 percent goaltending

If Botterill can significantly upgrade our defense by trading Kane, i say trade Kane. However, if he can't and he's only worth a second round draft pick as Dreger suggests, then I say keep Kane and make a run for the playoffs. If the Sabres are out of it by the TDL, then trade Kane at that time for the second round pick.

If Botterill knows that Kane won't sign an extension no matter what, it puts him in a pickle. Trading a guy who won't resign and who has a history of locker room/off-ice antics lowers his value significantly.

My bet is that he is traded for more than what Dreger is suggesting by July 10.

I long for the days of my biggest complaint being Matt Ellis in the lineup

IMO only way Kane gets traded is for a Top younger D man. If that trade is out there, I say go for it.

I don't see Kane as a future of the franchise here. He's too "Murray/Whaley era" for this franchise. And what I mean by that is he's the type of guy you trade for in a video game GM mode because it's all on ice/field results with none of the outside stuff factored in.

Good insight into the decision for Kane.
To me I would not trade Kane unless we are able to get a top defender for him. Looking at the Playoffs this year it is more evident than ever that we would need a guy like Kane to be on this team when we do make the playoffs. There is no one on the team or that I see in the pipeline that can play that power forward roll and still pot 25-30 goals a season.
If we can sign Kane to a 6 Mil contract I think that would be a good number if it goes into 6.5 range then we may have to trade him due to other contracts. The only money coming off the books in 18 is Georges 3.9 we would need to drop some of the dead weight because at that time we will also have Eichel and Reinhart up for extensions.
The best scenario would be seeing Bogosian and/or Molsen go to LV we would then clear up enough cap space to keep Kane even with the demands that Eichel and Reinhart would bring.

Like him or not, he is exactly the kind of player you need in the playoffs. I say 4 yrs and hope he matures more.
