Is it confirmed that kovy is conning back this year? I know it's May but this is a ridiculous amount of talk on this topic

I would prefer to keep Kovy and trade him at the deadline then trade him for Reilly Smith... Pass. If I am going to trade him to Florida I am targeting Matheson. If we have to sweeten the pot to pull it off or take on another contract, ok. But that would be the guy I'd be going after.

It's confirmed that he wants to. Nothing will be confirmed until the Devils sign him to a contract.

I think you're going to be disappointed with the return for him.

FLA would never trade a talented young defenseman for a couple years of a 34-year old Kovalchuk.

Agree on the Rangers...while I don't see management going crazy there is always the possibility they trade from that young forward group to obtain some Defensive stability and might look to fill out the forward group.

The Rangers will overpay. Kovalchuk will be injured and under productive. Devils will get better by drafting younger player. We've seen this twice before. On and on it goes.

One thing I might try to pull off if I were Ray would be to get Niederreiter from Minn; especially given the latest rumors. Like if you could give them Kovy (with 50% retained salary) & a 2nd for him, I think it would be good for both team. They would be essentially replacing Niederreiter for the same salary and be uniting Kovy with Parise (I can see Devils fans loving that ); while we get a young RW (And if we do select Hischier it would give him a Swiss connection on the team... I Rico-Nico-Nino line sounds amazing!)

While my first reaction is (frank) the Rangers, it could work if we took Nash back to clear the cap space fir them. But at that point they'd have to offer a heck of a lot in assets (assuredly draft picks) that it would be crazy....

I tend to agree. They'll get something decent but it's not going to be a ransom. Honestly, a guy and contract like Smith is the risk/reward they probably need to make. I wouldn't mind that deal, and maybe a conditional pick from Fla, too.

Help a brother out here:

If he comes back, does he sign a new contract, or does the old one get dusted off and reactivated?

Thanks in advance.

A few people have stated that teams won't give up a lot for a 34 year old Kovy. I disagree. Why? Because it happens every year at the trade deadline where teams give up quality future assets (players and/or picks) for older established players. There are several teams that are close to being Stanley Cup teams but are just missing that one piece...several teams will look at Kovy as that missing piece. Some teams miss out at the trade deadline and will therefore jump at the chance of getting him before the season starts.

I think we all see "a lot" differently. A high pick, prospect, and serviceable player? That's too much. But they'll get a decent return. I'm just curious to see which of those three Shero values most.

But it's really hard to predict this stuff. Heck, who ever would have thought Fiddler would get us a bigger return than Quincey and PAP did?

I mean Freidman said the value is at least a first round pick but I'm sure you know more than him.

While that would be amazing, it is prone to change if these teams find cheaper sources of offense in the mean time. Here's hoping though

Very true. And maybe vice versa?
