God no.
Letting UFA's walk for nothing?
Ones that will sign at a hometown discount?
That's madness. |

If they're both willing to take interesting hometown discount, keep em both.
If not, let em walk. |

why would either of them take a hometown discount after the way they've been treated by the front office? Both unceremoniously stripped of the C, both have had their character and meddle questioned, both have been on the receiving end of the blame for puerperal ineptitude. I don't see any discount being given. |

Patty 1 year at most max 3M
Jumbo 2 year average 3M per
I think they can still be productive players but they would have to give a strong discount to stay with the Sharks.
I would be bummed to see Patty in another jersey but I am prepared to see it and happy for him if that's what he wants and makes the money he wants.
Jumbo up till the injuries had a pretty good season, not what he used to be but still good. Worth keeping him unless he wants a very long term deal.

I'd really like both to stay, but really depends on the contracts.
Yes, we have some kids coming up from the Cuda that are "ready" to play in the NHL - but can they replace Marleau and Thornton? I have my doubts; Meier looked like he had a ton of energy - but I'd like to see him score a little more frequently than he did. Labanc started off great then went completely MIA.
Losing Thornton means we have what:
1 C - Couture
2 C - Hertl
3 C - Tierney
4 C - O'Regan or Carpenter?
If Marleau goes who do we have at LW?
1 LW - Hansen
2 LW - Boedker
3 LW - Karlsson
4 LW - ?
I'm sure some of the guys who are listed as RW would be fine sliding to the LW slot, but not sure who... Still. I'd feel a lot better with Marleau in one of those LW slots.
We have to see who Vegas plucks from us as well. I wouldn't be surprised if they grabbed Tierney which would leave us really thin up the middle.

Yeah.. LA isn't going to see another Cup while Marleau is still able to play hockey. |

I honestly see Wilson pulling off a big trade. Without Thornton the Sharks are not good enough up the middle to be a contender. Either Couture steps into the first line role and he makes a trade for a bonafide 2C OR we see a big splash and someone comes in to take that 1C spot. Sharks have more than enough talent to fill the wings with viable scorers. I will be surprised of both Thornton AND Marleau are offered contracts.. I just don't see it happening. My heart wants them back, but my head tells me it's not the right thing to do for the club.
Prepare for an interesting summer for the Sharks. Lots of decisions to make. |

I think that's what's going to happen. I see Marleau wanting more than the Sharks are going to offer. |

No! they want to stay in San Jose right? I'd try to sign both of them for a one year deal, then (if)things go sideways trade them( retain money) get picks /prospects, whatever? Give them aother chance at the cup ,and with a promise to possibly! resign them in the offseason ? It's worth a shot, but I'm sure they'll want a 2/3 years but you never know? But I think imho, that provides both parties flexibility! |

It's an absolute no brainer to let go of both. Sharks had numerous chances and never capitalized throughout the years. They would make great supplemental players on a playoff team, not being the focal points. |

They should see if Marleau would stay at hometown discount for 2 year contract and Thornton for 1 year contract (I would have said two, but the knee injury). If you take care of yourself and have drive, modern medicine/trianing/nutrition can extend players' careers much longer than before. Jaromir Jagr has made several GMs look like idiots for getting rid of him. So many teams would love to have either of them. |

Does Joe have a heavy parka and some good winter boots cause i'd love for him to walk a few thousand miles north up to Winnipeg!!! Winnipeg could also over pay him and give him the 3 years at 5 million he wants. He'd never sign here but would be an awesome compliment to Sheifele and Little at center and would easily be a huge piece helping Winnipeg get to the next level. |
