If Shero signs Shattenkirk, it will look more like...
GF 200 GA 252
... for a Phaneuf-like contract |

Over the last three years, Shattenkirk has been on the ice for fewer goals against/60 than Carlson, Orlov, etc. Don't know how signing him makes the Devils worse defensively. Also, Schneider bouncing back alone will trim that number down. |

Thanks for the blog, Todd.
I would definitely be pleased to have Shattenkirk but I have a good feeling that Vegas will be an attractive option because of the amount of money they have to play with out of the gates. They can keep their cap low through the expansion draft and just screw the teams assuming they'll get cap relief then sign free agents to deals other teams can't afford. |

If Vegas wants to give him 7 mil or the dream where the rags give him that, that's better for us anyways. Obviously no guarantees but it seems very likely the Devils are gonna grab a good defenseman from one of these teams because of the expansion draft, so if that happpens and we can get a player like Ekholm or Vatanen then tried Kovy for a decent 3-4 d man then we will not need to overspend, plus I think regardless of the outcome next year we're gonna draft a decent defenseman, if we can get shatty for like 3-4 years, sure in that timeline the hit won't hurt us but anything more and I think Shero passes. |

When your offensive zone start percentage is close to 60%, you will definitely be on the ice for less goals against. He has been sheltered, and both the Blues and the Caps made sure he wasn't out there for too many tough defensive assignments. If he wants to be a 1D, especially in NJ, he is looking at 50:50 zone starts if not worse. That means the numbers go down and you get exposed if you can't hang defensively |

I was thinking the same thing. We have a lot of draft picks and offensive prospects, both of which the Ducks are lacking. I think we can definitely acquire Vatanen. We can also trade Kovy to FLA for Matheson and a 1st or 2nd. Both are very gifted, young, and are also able to play defense.

Agreed, Shattenkirk gets points, but he's not a #1. Last year 5v5 his GA/60 was higher than team average, his GF/60 was lower than team average. The year before with St. Louis his GA/60 was the highest of defensemen on the team. He just doesn't appear to be a great 5v5 player.

X marks the spot.
He had a pretty good season 3 years ago... last two years, dead last on his team in +/- (for defensemen). He wants to be a #1 dman... not even close. Otherwise, St. Louis would have kept him.
I think it was Lebrun that talked about him and many GMs thought he wasn't even a second pairing, let alone a first. So I guess a lot of GMs out there believe what I posted. |

His first round record doesn't inspire much confidence either.

Should be looking at Castron's record, since he's the team's head scout. GM obviously has the final say, but a good GM should be listening to the guy he hired to actually run the scouting department. http://www.allaboutthejer...om-2007-through-2015-with
He's done a good job relative to the average. 1st rounders:
Voracek, Johansen, Wennberg, Rychel, Dano and Werenski stand out as hits. He also drafted John Moore, who's an NHL player, even if he's not a very good one. It's worth noting that in 2013 he had 3 1st rounders to work with and hit on all 3 (even if Rychel and Dano aren't fully established yet). It doesn't look like he's had much second round luck either, but Boone Jenner is an NHLer. Other hits in the later rounds:Cam Atkinson, Matt Calvert, David Savard, Josh Anderson, Joonas Korpisalo, Dalton Prout is.. something, Bjorkstrand.
The only concern I have is that Werenski is the only big hit on defense, although Markus Nutivaara played 66 games and was a 2015 7th rounder so that's impressive. Their 2nd first rounder in 2015, Gabriel Carlsson also played 2 games for them this year. |
