Ben Case: Part II: Top Four Goalie Coach Candidates GMRF Needs to Talk to for 2017-18
This is part two of a three part series that looks at the Hurricanes goaltending situation. I elected to do this in three parts to try and keep the articles shorter. Part one focused on what the goaltending depth looks like for the Hurricanes. Today focuses on who should be the top-four goalie coach candidates that I believe GMRF should be interviewing. Finally, part three will evaluate how to approach Ward/Lack this off-season. |

Prefer to make Cujo head guy and bring in an associate goalie coach for AHL/ECHL? |

Yep.
No need to overthink it. It's why CuJo was brought in to begin with anyway. I don't think Francis was sold on Marcoux but wanted to give him the year to be fair to him. |

Makes sense. I don't think Cujo would be bad, just not sold he's the best option. Canes got to get better at developing goalies. Last one they brought up to NHL with drafting (excluding Nedeljkovic one call up) was Peters. |

if you guys would spend close to the cap next year you actually have a good shot (Shattenkirk, trade for good forward), but that will not happen with the new defense contracts coming up the year after I guess. |

Good piece. That would be Rockford though not Rockville. Really regretted losing Peters there. Great mentor and coach.
With the money just invested in Darling - wouldn't be surprised if he has some input. Think he credited his AHL goalie coach in the Nashville system a lot for the turn in his career. |

I haven't commented much lately but thanks for your blogs. They are always a good read. On the goalie coach situation, I agree with Bingo. Just let Cujo have it. |

This is a real informative piece, and it sounds like an excellent group to choose from. Not sure I have a favorite, but expect most (if not all) would be an upgrade!
I've a hunch we won't see a move until the Caps are eliminated, or win the cup.
...a clue to who i think will be picked! |

Agreed that cujo would be a good choice! But I do know that Andrew is a great guy and up and coming coach, and a side note I bought a bunch of Chicago Blackhawks stuff he got from the team, for my son in law at Christmas from his cousin and Carolina their defense is looking good! |

Yeah, I don't see GMRF getting the green light to go spending crazy. The fact that he spent $16M on Darling is a good sign for progress, but don't think Karmanos is letting him get too aggressive. The D contracts will certainly be a question depending on what Karmanos is willing to spend.

I really like Coach Peters-he's been impressive. When the players stick to his system, they normally get good results too.
Good eyes-somehow I missed that and wrote Rockville. I would imagine he will have input on the goalie coach too. I'm thinking that goalie coach was Ben Vanderklok, right? |

Thanks for the feedback! I can't say it's a bad strategy either.
I do think that Darling needs to have some say, so I don't think it's as simple as just giving it to Cujo because of his career legacy. There is a big difference to being 5'10 and 6'6 in the NHL-so having a goalie who is used to teaching bigger goalies might be better.
Never bad to be looking at an option of good or best, as opposed to bad and better. |

I think he is one of the top goaltending coaches. Regardless of who has come through his coaching, the results seem to be impressive. His work with Johnson, Lehner and Nilsson has been impressive.
I'm sure your son in law loved the gear too! Very cool!
Let's hope the D continues to play as good as they have. The future certainly appears bright with the talent level they've shown and prospects in the system.
