It's funny: they replaced Zatkoff as backup at the NHL level to avoid reliance on him sinking the Kings' season and it ended up being reliance on him as backup at the AHL level that sunk the Reign's season. Perhaps they should've just kept Budaj and shored up the AHL backup position, instead.

As for leadership on the big club, we shouldn't conflate experience with leadership, IMO. For example, Lecavalier brought lots of experience, even leadership experience, but I doubt that he did much to lead while he was there, since he was new, he was about to retire and it would've seemed that Brown, Kopitar, Doughty and Carter knew what they were doing, having won 2 Cups. You can't just add a lot of over-30 players and call it leadership. McDavid, at 20yo, is probably a better leader than a lot of those over-30 players and even Kopitar and Doughty, despite their experience winning 2 Cups. Leadership is more about character than just experience, IMO. You need to find the right characters to lead your team and at the right times in their careers, not necessarily players who have been around the longest. Lecavalier and Greene might've been good leaders in their 20s, but neither is going to be nearly as effective of a leader when largely washed up and eyeing retirement. The best leaders are the ones who are naturally gifted at leading and still naturally gifted at the sport, to back up their words. If you can find such players, it's better than any collection of washed-up veterans.

Of course, those are the hardest to find. But yea, I agree, focus on guys who can play then lead

I've liked a lot of what Blake has said so far, but this article gave me pause. We'll see what he prioritizes this summer.

If we're talking Game Four, I thought he made a lot of good plays.

Yes, I thought he was easy to take the puck off of, easy to push around, made bad decisions when he had possession, and was varyingly ineffective or invisible. I wanted to see a lot more out of a kid who should be dominating an AHL team (especially one with so many regulars up in the NHL). That pass was such a thing of beauty though. I also wanted more out of Kempe, though he did assert himself at times and used his speed on that breakaway. I thought LaDue played well, though tried a few dekes at the blueline that wouldn't fly in the Nhl. Mersch was very assertive physically and hung around the net (which should make him noticed by the new regime) but I'm just not sold on his foot speed. Auger was faster than I thought and played a strong game, but also know that production was abnormal for him.

Come on now Sheng.

2014-15 Kings:
Mitchell departed (a big part of a team IMHO)
Richards deteriorated to nothing
Stollie's game was going further to poop
Williams was going UFA causing a dilemma I'm sure
Greene has been having his injuries happen
and Sutter cannot coach with any adversity
Not to mention the Voynov debacle

Doughty, Kopitar, Brown were the "leaders", if you can call them that. It was still a very talented team but missing the "grit", element you need to win.

As far as Zatkoff goes: his wussy hurt and he wasn't about to play a game his team desperatly needed. Flinn is a mountain but can't stop poop.

San Diego did do a good job of taking away space from Brodzinski. He didn't find the soft spots in this series except for Game One.

Big summer for Mersch. Love his game, but at this point, I'm not expecting him to emerge. Wouldn't surprise me if he did, but just the odds.

Come on now Sheng.

The point of what I wrote is that leaders (like Richards, Stoll, etc in 14-15) who can't perform at a high level aren't very useful. So I think we probably agree.

Despite the personnel losses, there was plenty of grit/leadership from 2014-16. But it wasn't effective enough grit/leadership.

Dear Jeff Zatkoff, you are a bum:

When Quickie went down and we needed you, your p7ssy started to hurt.

When Soupy went down and we needed you, your p7ssy started to hurt again.

Still looking for that cushy ten game a year, riding the pine, glamorous back-up roll are ya' Zats?

Zats, you suck donkey balls!
