I have a hard time believing the leafs would protect someone that shouldn't be protected.

Trading for Boyle was necessary for the development of the young players and the team as a whole. Until you lose in the playoffs, a player has no measuring stick as to what it takes to win. A second round pick and Byron Froese is a reasonable price to advance the rebuild at least one year.

Absolutely. Who knows, without him maybe leafs don't even make playoffs. I have no issue with that trade, and the experience and leadership he provided for the team in 2 months.. Hopefully they can sign him for another year or two. He's probably looking for longer term though.

I didn't mind the trade, but no to resigning him.

1. I know hockey players are not the brightest bunch but how were they still suprised about the Leafs on the 3rd time of playing them?
2. Alzner is anything but a 2-way defenseman. He's 1 way, but that way is defense.
3. Why is Boyle likely not back?
4. Tavares makes no sense whatsoever. We paying 8 mil for our 2nd line centre?
5. Neither Dermott, nor Nielsen will be in the NHL next year (sans a couple of games if a call up needed)
6. Leafs should pick a dman at 17/18 this year if Hague, Foote, Brannstrom or somehow Liljegren (seen some crazy rankings) are available. This whole don't draft D because they take a couple of years to develop is a silly argument.
7. Leafs need defenseman on ELC's that can contribute when the big 3 get their raise.
8. I should probably work for the Leafs upper management in some capacity

Why wouldn't Dermott play for the leafs next year? There is a good chance he's ready next year. He's one of the best dmen in the league and the Marlies best.

Why is it silly to pass over a potentially better player just because you think they need something?

If Tavares wants to sign with the leafs, then you sign him and figure out money later. Free asset, and trade whoever down the road. No downside to that.

Ridiculous.

What if Tavares is interested in signing for a reasonable amount as a UFA? It's highly unlikely, but what if he likes what he's seeing in T.O. (his home town) and wants to be a part of it?

Edit: I'd pay Tavares $8M x 7yrs in a heartbeat.

You think Tavares is gonna sign for 5 mil? Or even 6 mil?

I'd seriously doubt it.

I'd say he's going to Buffalo for top $ or staying in New York

Tavares isn't signing for 8.
And why is Boyle gone? I thought he fit in well. He'd be great for another year or 2 I think

Last year everyone including me, was all over this space about how and why we should sign Stamkos. Stamkos is a great player, despite injury issues, he also signed a reasonable contract, which Leafs may well have matched. Looking back, I'm so glad we didn't sign him, not because he isn't a great player, not because he wouldn't fit in. We need the cap space for defense. Leafs will need to add a backup goalie for a million or two, the lion's share of remaining cap space needs to be spent on defense. Tavares would be nice, but is he a number one - ahead of Matthews.?Not for me, not now, not ever. How much better is he overall than Kadri? $3 million better? maybe. Should we spend that $3 million on offence or defense.

We don't even own 2 of these guys, and they're in the lineup? He has to replace guys that aren't even leafs yet?

Sure, no worse pker than other....

my opinion only... but I'd offer Boyle 4M for the coming season.... which is likely more than he'll get from anyone else... Leafs won't have any kind of CAP issues in the 2017/2018 year... and that gives a season of looking further at the Goat ....

pretty obvious that Boyle's contributions in the locker room and on the ice were needed...

only way he's not going back to Tampa is if there' sufficient financial incentive to uproot family to Toronto.
