Pens will need to steal every game they can just like last year. This will be the hardest series of the playoffs if every game is like that.

This is why, over a short sample size ( a best-of-seven series, for instance), all of the advanced stats mean jack squat.

Let's all pretend that "luck" can actually be statistically quantified.

By the way: last night, on a 4-lane road (2 lanes each way), I was doing 50 (in a 50) in the right-hand lane. The box truck in the left-hand lane was doing 40-45. The gentleman in the red pickup behind the box truck swerved behind me, raced to get right up my ass, started blaring his horn and flashing his high beams at me. As soon as there was JUST ENOUGH space for him to get back into the left lane, he swerved into that lane, pulled up next to me and gave me the finger.

I am such a horrible driver, and the gentleman in the red pickup knows how important it is to drive faster than the posted speed.

it takes some thought, but I think you are able to figure out if a team or player is getting lucky/unlucky

If the caps lose the series does Ovechkin ask for a trade?

Haha it's kind of like saying everyone that believes in advanced stats thinks like James Tanner

Absolutely. No better place to ask this than the Pens blog on Hockeybuzz

I hate MAF but be really stole the game last night. 9/10 nights that should've been a loss.

I think Hansey might be a worse skater than Hal Gill was.

No, I believe they think more like Ryan Wilson. He's basically Tanner lite, and never misses up and opportunity to trash Toews and Scuderi even when there's nothing to write about them.

I'm just saying, told you guys so. He's the poster child for run-of-the-mill 6/7 D.

That was all we were looking for, because the outlook at the time was Letang being able to come back without surgery... He was about 2 weeks from that until he hit that wall in the recovery

To be far it wasn't the WHOLE game that we were buried in our zone. Just the second half of the game. with 5 minutes to go in the first that caps had 1 shot on goal. We also outchanced the caps pretty heavily in the first 5-10 minutes of the 2nd. After that we got destroyed and Fleury was doing his hasek impression. Agreed though that this is unsustainable (but i also thought that about MTL when we got halaked in 2010)

Sully is awesome, and I don't want to question his strategy... but not changing up dmen (or ate least pairings) because we are winning could come back to bite us. Schultz-Dumoulin was so solid at the end of the year, why did we move away from that? Hainsey leading in ice time? cmon man...

We got a 2 goal lead and sat back and tried to win 2-0 instead of continuing to push play. From the fancy charts, you can see the game was pretty even up to the 2-0 lead

Hainsey makes me sick when he has the puck in the D zone. It's either a bad pass or a flubbed clear. When he has time he usually ices it.

Advanced stats mean as much as they ever do in the playoffs.

You are going to win more "small sample" sizes in the playoffs when your advance stats are better. Tough to win 4 series on PDO and luck. This may be the series we need to win on luck, but to win 4 series you need a good process. Luckily we should be able to win the analytics game in every other series we play.

We knew we would need to win a game or two like this to beat the caps.

Holtby with his .857 SV % didn't deserve to win.

Ron Hainsey is just like Alexander Daigle: No matter what the question is, he is never the answer.
