I imagine you'd find a pretty wide discrepancy in the way each team gathers and uses advanced stats. Some may rely mostly on the traditional corsi models available to the public. Some may not even use those, Colorado? I think most teams have their own stats that break down shots in much more detail.

Boudreau definitely didn't help out his reputation any this year. Seemed like he was waiting for the other shoe to drop this whole series.

Excellent blog. Seeing those danger-based shot numbers really did confirm my suspicions that the Blues were giving up a ton of meaningless shots and were not in fact being badly outplayed like the national media was suggesting.

Looks like the schedule is set and the Blues get under way Wednesday night.

An odd first round with only a ton of overtime games, yet most series concluded pretty one-sided and no game sevens.

Boudreau showed himself to be a guy that hasn't been able to figure it out and knows that everyone knows that. He gets uptight as soon as bad things happen and i think his team senses that.

His giant, bulbous, Bob-the-Tomato head gives it away. He's like a giant mood ring.

Do we think the Blues matchup better or worse against Nashville?

I think speed is probably the biggest issue for this Blues team, and I believe the Nashville team (while certainly fast) are not quite up to the velocity of the Wild. I think raw shot totals will be closer.

For this series: flip a coin.

i wouldn't be shocked to see either team come out of this on top.

I think Predators in 6 in a very tight series, Blues will put up a good fight but I think Nashville is a slightly better team. 3 games will go to OT.

Where do you get your stats on low/mid/high danger chances?

Carcus,

Did you buy an extra playoff strip this year? I hope the rep who got me my extra strip was wrong on pricing otherwise the team is charging me more for the 2nd round than the single gate price

Saturday was a rough day watching that game but man what a play by Sobo.

The refs were com0letely ignoring calls on the Wild and calling most everything on the Blues

glad the blues won but they will have to step it up vs Nashville

So far only one 8:30 start in this round

Lets keep it going

Great article Jammer.

It's things like this that should cause people to learn to question media driven narratives and why people want to tell their stories the way they do.

Look we all create narratives for every aspect of life. Science itself is a narrative as most of it is far from settled(that does not necessarily diminish any scientific findings value but should mere have us ask critical questions).

But here is the biggest issue I have with advanced stats and the way people use them and other narrative devices and fail in doing so because they do not understand context--the CONTEXT SHOULD BE SYSTEMS THINKING!!!!

Every game is an organism unto itself ripe with numerous variables and predictive qualities. These elements are not static as most people view the world and phenomena, BUT DYNAMIC.

This is why we can say when good teams go down a goal some things are going to occur. Because the context of the play offs is a dynamic of ultimate victory made up of series victories I could predict the liklihood the Blues would go up by two goals and then the game would enter a dangerous dynamic for the Blues.

In fact you can use this thinking to understand why the Blues are terrible with an empty net or why Minnesota was producing more low quality shots.

One of the problems with any use of statistics is that absolutes don't work well which means subjectivity is often introduced.

Example - Use location to determine high danger shot - compare clark macarthur one time series clinching goal to a shot where a player in the same spot has his stick checked and it barely dribbles on net. They are both saves from the same spot but i would say one was a low danger shot and one was a high danger shot. Absolute location doesn't work.

Of course, you and i may watch the same shot and one of us can call it high and the other mid. This subjectivity can skew the statistics (is the same person judging all shots, how similar is the criteria being applied, is the person unknowingly using some personal bias, etc).

The latter approach is better but it is far from exact or perfect.

Like Guruu said (my paraphrase anyway), using more data and information that you consider in relation to each other is generally better.

The problem imho as an team outsider is the amount of man hours it would take to do a good job getting the information in a workable format. For example, look at shot dangers by opponent, look at them by score scenario, look at them by es/sh/pp, by goalie, by lineup differential, by quality of competition, etc.

Anyone remember if it was Charron or Kozari that kept calling the penalties on JBo? JBo said " I don’t agree with either of them. But I know that ref. We have a bit of a history."

Looked to me like the wild players were diving all over the place around Jay Bo

Clearly they knew something

Found a replay, it was Kozari who kept calling penalties on JBo. Something to remember for the future. Wonder if this gets him going after JBo even more, or he starts backing off. Was the other ref who had the no-goal interference call too.

Libtard James Tanner is hillarious. It's getting to point where the site almost needs to decide if it wants to have legitimate bloggers write in most cases opinion based blogs with at least a hint of hockey intelligence or the click bait crap he spews.

Yet again the Blues screw their loyal fan base. Season ticket holders and partial season ticket holders who committed to buying additional playoff tickets for every round (guaranteeing them purchase of all rounds) get the pleasure of paying a HIGHER ticket price than the listed single gate price for tickets this round. For example, Blue chip seats are being charged to those loyal fans at a rate of $166 per ticket per game but the gate list price is only $159. How in the world do they justify charging more? Oh wait, they set the price baking on facing Chicago and having a gate price of more like $199.

The team continues to treat long time loyal fans poorly. I realize its a business but I might suggest that the team consider that this is a two way street. When the team goes through rebuilding again, will the same fans stay and continue to buy season tickets like they did last time? If their behavior doesn't change, I bet they won't in the same numbers they did last time.

I was told that extra strips were not happening this year......

I bought extras in round one for games 3 and 6 through the presale, so at regular cost. Not getting any extras this round.

In the playoff info where we renewed, it stated extra playoff strips would not be offered this year....

Did you call your rep and get them? We usually get extras since our season tickets are shared, giving us the possibility of everyone that wants to go to a game the option. And selling them if we can't use them all to co workers/etc.

Yes. I called and specifically asked for them since we have been doing this for years. We use the extra to take family and friends. We were wait listed and it was a bit of a hassle because of held seats (i think for players) but it worked out ok. It just was a little more cumbersome of a process but the seats we got were ok (not as good as normal but decent).

We are approaching 20 years as season ticket holders so maybe that had something to do with the accommodation.

Tarasenko isn't a superstar? Also for those that didn't read the article, the author compared the Preds to a zombie grizzly bear, wearing a suit of armor, juggling chainsaws; but he's not bias or anything.
