Bob Duff: Nyquist on 2016-17 season: Not good enough Even though he set a career high for assists and finished strongly, Detroit forward Gustav Nyquist is aware that the Red Wings will be in trouble if he continues to underachieve in the goal-scoring department.

Yes really, a coin flip sounds about right.

But I think Howard's contract needs to be traded or left unprotected. Will Coreau ever play up to his potential, is a big question. We know Mrazek can play well upon occasion. A trade would be nice to get a player with immediate impact now. This expansion draft might make for some very interesting multi-team trade possibilities that would give Holland some flexibility.

Interesting piece on Nyquist. I still think Detroit could get a good defenseman for Nyquist. If he underachieves again next season, he will become a disappointing untradeable. Even if he stays and scores 25 goals, Detroit still doesn't make the playoffs with the weak defensive unit they presently have.

Make no mistake, Detroit desperately requires two top four defensemen now, no matter how they get them.

And on a brighter side down on the farm in Grand Rapids...

Griffins are up 1-0 in games to Milwaukee Admirals and winning 2-1 after one period in game two. Axel Holmstorm with a goal. What's interesting is this kid plays with some sandpaper. He doesn't take any crap from other players. He sticks up for himself very well for a european prospect.

After watching several Griffins games this year you can see hands-down that Svechnikov is just about NHL ready. He's got all the tools. And he seems to be in the middle of a lot of scrums after the whistle which is good to see. He's not afraid to get his nose dirty.
