Keenan used to do that in Chicago all the time. I can only remember once where he was stuck shorthanded after the penalty expired.

Mike used to do that on the first portion of the kill but would get a guy in the box at the first stoppage closest to the midway point. It was why he didn't get caught a man short.

Why would a coach ever not have somebody in the box as the penalty expires? I guess maybe there could be a long period of un-whistled play and he just got caught, but why not put a non-PP killer in the box and just replace him later on the PP just in case?

Babcock mentioned (not sure if true) that it's seen as a bit of a slight on a player to be there for 5 mins. Some kind of unwritten code?

Try to wait until 2 mins left or something.

It's sucks to have to sit for 5 minutes when you didn't have anything to do with the penalty but there has to be a couple players who weren't going to see the ice during that time anyway. After that, I don't think anyone will argue next time if they're asked to go take a seat for a few minutes.

I have often seen a team get a penalty of their own during a five minute power play. You can sit a Matthews or someone you don't use on the penalty kill but if the other team gets a penalty then now its four on four. All of a sudden that guy you put in the box could be very useful to you but you can't use him. Not sure if Babs took a chance or just flat out forgot to put a man in.

Paul, if your reading this could you comment on the Polak hit itself? He got a two game suspension for the hit while I didn't think he should have gotten anything. The five and a game I think was plenty, but then I am not a ref and also a Leaf fan.

In the case where a player is serving a penalty on behalf of another player, are you allowed to switch who is serving it? So, using the example above, could TOR put Matthews in the box to serve the 5, but then put somebody else in there during a stoppage if another penalty were to occur?
