Ben Case: Would Canes Be Playoff Team with Frederik Andersen? The Canes dropped a disappointing game in overtime to the Leafs last night. While the Canes put forth another solid effort, the tiny details continue to be what kills games. One extremely poor goal by Ward, a few D collapses and failed attempts to clear the puck out of the zone were the most concerning.

Interesting article considering Carolina drafted Andersen in 2010 but didn't / couldn't sign him.

First off I am a Leafs fan , the canes did play a good game and it could have gone either way last night. I like the artical but you seem to forget some small details. Anderson has some very severe hot and cold streaks , don't get me wrong I'm happy to have him but I really don't think you would be further ahead in the points. The Leafs will be a cup winner in the next 3-5 years thanks to young talent like Mathews , Marner, Nylander, Brown, Hyman but we really do lack depth. The canes looked good last night but you can't fault Ward for where your at, you have a young defence and I really think your team will be better then you think sooner then you think

I think the stat you'd want to compare are the high danger save percentage or whatever they call it. Might bring you to the same conclusion.

The Canes would be a playoff team with MAF. Here's hoping he's the Canes starter next season, Lack is bought out & Ward moves into the back up role.

who are these so called leafs fans that grumble that we aren't farther up because of Anderson?

I've have not heard a real leafs fan claim that at all. In fact the real leaf fans know that without Anderson we would be lower in the standing then we currently are now. Had it not been for Andersons outstanding play in a few games this season ,we would in fact be lower in the standings.

I call BS. End of story

Can't say with a better goalie we would be a playoff team.

We need 30 more goals scored. Even with the same goals against and +30 goals we'd be a top 15 team.

I would also like you to remember that Andersen missed most of the preseason due to injury, so he didn't get the opportunity to get used to the idiosyncrasies of his new teammates. So October was not kind to his stats.
Also we started the season with Enroth as his back up and he never did jell with the team. So when you consider how the season started it's no wonder we had so many goals against.

It's an interesting question. I think they'd be closer than one would think, but agree that the lack of scoring in Carolina is the bigger issue. There have been ups and downs for Andersen, but I have no doubt that a Carolina like defense would give his numbers a really nice boost.

For both the Leafs and Hurricanes it is a process. Neither is in the ideal and final state of their development. But if nothing else Carolina is in a good spot to deal with some of their needs. Blueliners are gold right now and obviously you don't want to move too many guys out, but there is a luxury there to upgrade the offense in the summer.

Lack of goaltending is the most significant issue on this team.

Goal scoring is a problem, but that's more easily fixed.

Cam Ward an Eddie Lack have two of the worst Save Percentages of any goaltenders of the last 3 years. It's abysmal and it affects every other part of the team.

I think they would be fighting with the Leafs and Islanders to make the playoffs, but not a team that's firmly grasping a playoff spot.
