While the shot totals were skewed in Dallas' favor,
the shot total was completely not indicative of how that game went (I know that's not what you were implying....just seemed like a good way to bring it up).
sens were actually leading in shots until they took a 2 or 3 goal lead and then they sat back.....which is the system....and that's when dallas started getting lots of shots.
people are saying that Ottawa's play isn't sustainable because of the possession stats, but completely ignore the score effect on the stats......
my rant for the day. |

Exactly. Even when Dallas put the pressure on, there was no panic, they got shots from where Ottawa wanted them to get shots for the most part, and other than a couple of close calls and weird bounces there wasn't much doubt about who the better team was. |

yup.
corsi and possession are fine if it's something that occurs for the entire game, but last night Ottawa was outshooting dallas until they went up 3 goals and then just went in to shut down mode. |

I have to agree - drawing broad conclusions from over-generalized statistics that are taken out of context is a recipe for looking foolish. If the Senators are going to have playoff success, it's going to come via low-scoring 1-goal wins, where they play to the strength of their system. Personally, I'll take a team that buries their chances when it counts ahead of a team that dances around the perimeter of the offensive zone all game long but generates nothing but low-quality shots on goal. And come playoff time, nobody should really care what kind of stats the team has on average over the course of the year... the only thing that matters is how they're playing as a team when the puck drops in the post-season.
And while people seem to incessantly goo-gah over teams with impressive offensive numbers, teams that know how to protect leads and win 1-goal games are far better off come playoff time than teams that try to do nothing but score. Pittsburgh didn't win the Stanley Cup last year by blowing out teams like Washington and San Jose... Pittsburgh won every one of their games against Washington by 1 goal and never had more than 3 goals in regulation time. They also never scored more than 3 goals against San Jose, and if you take out a pair of empty net goals apiece you effectively have 5/6 games in that series being decided by scores of 3-2 or 2-1.
That said, I honestly don't know how well Ottawa will do if they make the playoffs, but I'm certainly not willing to dismiss them because they play more of a team defense game. And if any teams overlook them to the extent that the media seems to make a habit of doing, they could easily pull an upset or two against bigger-name teams. |

I would personally like that but no way in hell buttman lets a western team transfer to the east and skew even more the conferences...it would have to be a team like Carolina or Florida from the east to move to Quebec... |

Will be interesting to see how this new look team responds playing the Habs, Wild, Hawks, and Pens later this month. It's nice to win games that you should win. It's even nicer when you can win games that you aren't expected to win. Those will be the games we can truly judge where this team is at going into the stretch run.
I think we are near the top of the "middling" teams, but the jury is still out on how we stack up against the top tier teams. Playing teams that either ahead of us or with us for a sustained period of time will be a good measuring stick.
Sens can benefit from the wonky playoff format and get to the Conference Final, but running into a Caps or Pens team in the Conference Final will be a tall task.
The possession talk isn't anything new. I'm always a huge advocate of quality shots. If a teams gets 40 shots on you, but 35 of them are from the outside generally, who cares? This team is built on getting leads and sitting back. Effing boring to watch, but if it works, it works.
Wilson out. |

it showed it was the 2nd game in 2 nights both on the road as the boys struggled out of the gate but prevailed again! Great game by Pageau & Karlsson!
Dido was ok...no way he deserves that 2nd penalty and even though they didn't give him an assist, he help get the puck to Karlsson on his 1st goal of the night.
A beauty in OT even getting partially tripped up, still sped towards the net to score the winner!
No Ryan, Turris or Stone tomorrow night and the 3rd road game in 4 nights so the boys will once again have to give it their all! |

The boys gutted out another 2 pts last night.... wasn't pretty, but on a tough road trip, 2 pts is 2 pts.
Now go to mile high and get 2 more |

They looked gassed for better parts of the game, but yep getting the job done.
I wonder what that would have looked like vs San JOse or Washington
Another "should win" game vs the Avs, they have a real opportunity to put some distance between them and the teams below them. |
