I would like an explanation of your parameters for #1 defensemen as well, James. I'm curious what makes either Niskanen or Orlov a #1 in your opinion. |
|
|
|
Okay? - Blackstrom2
We know.. when Mike Green was 'the bar' for so long.. you guys really don't know what you're actually missing in a Rob Blake, Ray Bourque, or Scott Stevens in their prime.. or many others..
You thinking that lump is a #1 is hilarious, though.. |

Isn't there a difference between being a top pair defender in 2017 vs. being a top 10 Defenseman of all time? |

Doughty, weber, keith, hedman, eckman larrson, burns, karleson, subban, sutter, peiterangelo, giordono, these are #1 defenseman. to put orlov and niskenen in this group is absurd |

I would much rather have this return than hanzals return which is a bunch of Hal forwards 4 years from now. A first rounder and Sanford would've been perfect for the yotes instead of late round picks at the turn of next century. Now considering shattenkirk is a ton more valuable than hanzal (see hall trade) I suppose this ends up being a steal for the capitals. |

They are in the top 30 defenseman in the NHL.
That's what makes you a #1
IN Niskanen's case, he's a shot suppression machine. When he's on the ice, the Caps have the puck.
He's also in his fourth consecutive 30+ point season.
So he's giving you A grade defense and A- offense.
As for my boy Orlov: He does basically the same thing, with slightly better defense and slightly worse offense.
They're both legit top pairing guys and could easily anchor a lesser team's entire core.

Everyone in here talking poop on Niskanen, while quietly accepting Carlson...
Niskanen has always been better than Carlson. |

You've hit the nail on the head. When you say #1 it's as people think they're only five of them in the entire league. Look, I don't think Orlov is Eric Karlsson, but he's pretty freaking good and he's gonna help your team a lot more than say Roman Josi or Ristolainen. (Two players I'm betting I'd take no crap for if I (wrongly) called them number ones). |
