Broken record I know but quality of competition has a lot to do with Benning's dominance in fancy stats.

The good ol fashion eye ball test serves up all the explanation one should need as to how goalies on ice save percentage is superior with Russel on the ice. He plays hard and blocks the lanes. And we seem to win games.

Benning to my eye has struggled overall since being put with Sekera but is visibly improving ever game. If he continues to get paired up with Reggie, faces top 4 competition, and continues to improve that would be remarkable to say the least.

If Benning out plays Russel in a top 4 role for the rest of the year that's awesome but also wouldn't have me thinking our top 4 RD is set for the foreseeable future. Too early, too small sample size.

Agree about Tampa. They are a much better team than many in the East/their record shows and should not be taken lightly.

Attention any and all Flames fans: it has been proven that sucking it will make your team suck less. Not a necessity perhaps, but you might want to at least think it over.

If we're exchanging notes: Saying this as a Flames fan, maintaining a delusion of grandeur about your favourite team's roster is a great way to stay optimistic during the hard times.

Except all measures for QualComp has Edmonton's competition pretty evenly divided between the top 4 and only Russell's metrics stands out in a negative way. And per Jonathan Willis, since November 1st only Gryba has a lower GF% than Russell. He isnt an outlier, he had an exceptional month by goals and has been trending back to expected results ever since.

There isnt a coach in the NHL who will say they'd be happy with bad process. Shots and attempts are the process for goals. Breakout passes are part of the process for getting those attempts and shots. Shots, attempts, and passing are at their worst with Russell on the ice.

When Benning has played in Russell's regular spot, he has out-perfomed Russell. Plain and simple.

Do the metrics account for his shot blocking and the amount of likely goals that it prevents, and how that stat balances out against his DaftPunk metrics?

The biggest issue with Russel is the reason why he has to block so many shots, as in he can't get the puck out of his own zone. Not sure how that affects the DaftPunk metrics

So when he blocks a shot - when he doesn't have puck posession - it's a result of him being unable to execute a zone exit?

Not quite. But when he has to block a ton of shots it's very much related to his inability to move the puck out of the zone. If a defender fails to move the puck out or turns it over by sending the puck out around the boards onto the stick of an attacking player, then the play continues back towards the Oiler net.

It's not a good thing that he has to block so many shots. Same willingness to block shots but on a player who can also move the puck to a forward would be fantastic.

Interesting.

Karlsson, Hjalmarsson, Ristolainen, Giordano, Provorov, Weber, Pietrangelo.

What do they all have in common? They are all top 10 in blocking shots in the NHL. I would assume that they are also terrible at moving the puck out of their own zone.

Typically... I've had this one a few days now, and there's been no issues. The first sign of anything going wrong, I'll remove it. So far, it seems like a free version of Netflix that's on steroids.

Defensemen will all be pretty good shot blockers usually. But some guys become "specialists" mostly because of the style they play and because the get running around alot. I remember a bunch of guys getting after me about getting rid of Smid. Guys on here were going on about him being a warrior and a great shot blocker and he would be missed on our team. He sucked.
Russell sucks.

Remember Chia going on about Russell's great zone entries and stuff when they signed him? He's a good kid. But not a top 4 dman.

Smid was our best d-man at the time and getting rid of him was a head scratcher. Maybe if we had eomployed some actual NHL d-men we wouldn't have ruined Jultz.
