Yesterday, I talked about it being time that the Canes solidified their deadline status as “sellers.” My two reasons were because they would most likely face the Capitals if they got the final wildcard position and the potential to get a better draft pick by not making the playoffs. Currently, while the Canes are four points from the wildcard, they are also only three points from the third worst team in the NHL.

I do think that had some negative results for his play. I think the main reason they struggled though was he was left out to dry a lot though and the D zone coverage at times was horrendous. Oates was a great O and PP coach, however, as a head coach I do not think he fit that bill.

It is almost like he knows his time with the Canes is coming to an end and he is just collecting a paycheck. As of late, he has been making poor defensive decisions that have cost the Canes some winnable games. Finally, when looking at the game against the Caps on Tuesday, he was more of a liability and his effort was sub-par.

Sounds like he'd be a real hot commodity to other teams.

He still has the capability to play good D. Just doesn't seem like he is committed to Canes and has one foot out the door. I almost wonder if they already told him they aren't extending his contract or something.

Oates is all-around garbage.

Hainsey should be traded, but it does concern me that there would not be any member of the defensive core over the age of 26. I like the idea of having at least one veteran presence.

Pick up a vet for the 3rd pairing next year, and keep on trucking.

I haven't kept up with where we are with managing the expansion draft. Is it wiser to keep him and make him available then?

He's a UFA so, no.

Basically the only guys we need to expose are Lee Stempniak and Cam Ward.

I confess to not paying it a whole lot of attention. So I'm mistaken that a certain number of D, O and a goalie have to be made available and they must meet minimum games played?

The only players I can see Vegas maybe taking from who is available are Stempniak, Ward, and maybe Nordstrom.

Think he still has more trade value than some of the other options available to protect. Basically the only reason for doing it. Unlikely Vegas would take him, but more likely they'd take him than the other D available, so don't lose him for nothing.
