He does deserve more recognition. He's a great goalie behind a great team.

I think you're a bit amiss when you say the caps have three number one defencemen. I think it would be more appropriate to say they have three high end first pairing defence.

When you say the former, karlsson, doughty, burns, letang, hedman, kieth(last years version anyhow), Oel come to mind. Maybe even subban, josi could be included.

John Carlson is a great player. He is not an astute defenceman with game breaking talent. Orlov still has some quirks that are not deniable. Not sure if it's niskanan or alzner you're referring to as the third but neither are in the debate either. All great players. But there's an upper echelon that they don't belong to.

I agree that the upper echolon is for guys like OEL and Vlasic and Karlsson.
I do not agree that Josi is even close to that level.

But I also think that #1 Dman is a term that includes more than the elite five or six best guys. Orlov, Niskanen and Carlson are all players who could easily be a competitive team's best defenseman.

If you want to just call them top-pairing dman, that's fine.

Karl Azner is an acceptable bottom pairing player, but either he is crazy overrated or Matt Niskanen is crazy underrated.
