Not arguing the call or no call (I think by NHL rules it should be a penalty), but I've watched the replay no less than 10 times and I can't for the life of me figure out how his stick breaks so easily. At some point, the league has to rethink the rule because modern twigs snap with very little force and a play that really should just be classified as a stick check becomes a slashing penalty. You see the play around the league more and more and every time I see it all I can think is "that stick shouldn't break there".

Either way, I'm sorry for Wings fans that it ended like that because we've been on the other end of games ending like that and it sucks. See you guys in a few days.

In the old days it would have taken one hell of a whack to break a wooden stick. Since this rule was instituted, these sticks have become even more flimsy making this rule a joke. A player sets up to shoot and a stick will fall apart in his hands.

However it is a rule and like any rule it must be called consistently or dropped.

It seemed to have force to it. Perhaps that is what broke the stick? I agree they break too easily today, but that is slashing. I appreciate that our section gave them some beer showers. Yeah see you in a few. Hopefully we can return the favor

The rule is like 9 years old, so I really don't know what you are talking about.
It is an extension of the 2008 finals when Pitt slashed the stick out of a Det Dmans hand, and there was no call. Pitt ended up scoring because they essentially had a 5 on 4.
