I always think "superstars" are the players that are on commercials all of the time. The term identifies with fame, in my opinion, more than skill... although the two are typically hand-in-hand.
Superstars are usually the player that represents that team.

I think of "stars" as the players who represent the team, face(s) of the franchise. Superstars are the players who represent the sport, faces of the game.
