Got to think your correct on this James. Does Vegas take him in the expansion draft? Who knows. (He must be near the top of the list for goalies). Even if Vegas takes a pass he will want to move on and I think the Caps would most likely accommodate him.

Yeah, I don't see how the Vegases could pass on him. Pittsburgh is probably hoping they take Fleury, but If I'm them, I roll the dice on as many 25 yr old goalies as are available.

The Predators in '98 selected five goalies.

I totally forgot about the expansion draft, I am going to add a little blurb.

Fleury can't be exposed, due to his contract 'clause', unless he waives it.

Pittsburgh (5)
Sidney Crosby
Marc-Andre Fleury
Phil Kessel
Kris Letang
Evgeni Malkin

Personally, I think Fleury gets traded before expansion, but we'll see?

James...you don't think Pitts could trade Fleury and get an asset back rather then just letting him go for nothing? Or are you thinking it would be better to lose Fleury and not another player rather than getting back a 2nd round pick/1st round or whatever they'd get for him?

I think Fleury gets moved. Definitely won't get a 1st for him, honestly just the cap savings is worth the move IMO. I'd be happy with a 4th round pick.

I think they'd just rather have his cap space and who cares what they get back. But I didn't realize he wasn't eligible for draft.

They have to trade or waive him or they lose Murray. Isn't that how it works?

They can trade him, buy him out, ask him to waive his NMC, or expose Murray.

Speaking of which, Metropolitan has to be the dumbest name for a division they could have possibly come up with.

I wasn't convinced after last season. But as this season moves on and he keeps up his strong play I am afraid you are correct.

The Pens are in tough with Fleury. They have no leverage.
Everybody knows they need to trade him, and he can veto any trade.
I think Dallas is the only team that needs him and is a good enough team that he'd agree to waive his NMC.
The return would probably just be one of their dud goalies, so the Pens can expose them and protect Murray.
Niemi wouldn't be too bad as a backup to Murray for 1 more year.

Seems like it'd have to be Niemi, if that were the case. Lehtonen carries a cap hit higher than Fleury's, I can't fathom the Penguins taking a crappier goaltender that eats up an extra $150k in cap space.

Nah he can't veto any trade. he gives 18 teams he CAN be traded to prior to the season, I believe. (per Hockeyscap.com)

Thanks for the info. I thought he had a full NMC.
That helps them out then. Still a tough spot, but not as dire as I thought.

Oh for sure, they are in a tough spot, and I really hope GMJR isn't holding out hoping for a decent return (rumors from the draft said he didnt like the offers) just dump the guy's contract. Makes it a win for Pens IMO.

I believe that there is no way Gruby gets traded. The Caps need him for their Stanley Cup run. The smartest thing is to hold onto him in hopes he is selected by Las Vegas. If I'm not mistaken, teams can only lose 1 player in the expansion draft. I'd rather lose Gruby than the other players that are going to be exposed. The Caps will probably have to protect 8 skaters, rather than 7 forwards and 3 defenseman. Otherwise, Orlov would be exposed. I'd much rather lose Gruby than Orlov. I'd rather lose Gruby than at least 3 of the forwards that would be exposed in my scenario.

They could probably get a big haul for Orlov in the offseason if they moved him before the expansion draft. I am assuming Orpic has a NTC and has to be protected?

Still a tough spot.

There are basically only 30 protection spots for goalies for the draft.

Not many teams have an open protection spot to accommodate fleury’s NMC. That’s far more limiting than the 18-team list.

Honestly not sure, my guess is between Hornqvist, Hagelin, Rust, Sundqvist, or maybe Pouliot (if he's not traded.)

I think Orlov and Carlson are - should be - the only untouchable D on this roster.

That said, the whole NTC/NMC bs really makes rational trade behavior difficult.

Grooby deserves a shot at starter, but is there a fruit ripe for picking back on the farm?

Maybe Mr. Chad Johnson wouldn't mind coming back to DC next season.
