"On defense, Erik Karlsson is what he is, and that isn't going to change."
Full column and this is the only positive statement that can be made on a team that has done okay so far this season. You guys are all in a depressive state wanting to wallow in your despair. You seem to enjoy your misery and you wonder why regular posters from past years just avoid the Sens blog now. Imagine the fun you will have if the Sens go on a serious losing skid. |

I think for sure it's a top six.
I think with Chabot and englund coming up and the top 4 being okay for now (I personally think ceci will get better, he's still young) there is no pressing need to address this area.
in goal, condon has been good, andy will be back, and the sens have 2-3 good prospects in goal. if nobody pans out, getting a goalie via trade, UFA, or even the waiver wire is easy as hell........no need to address that now
I think top six is the big one. dzingel had a hot start, has speed to burn and is talented but realistically I see him as an excellent 3rd liner (with pageau maybe) and a fill in on the top six. I think there's a good chance we lose smith at the deadline (hopefully) or in the offseason if his contract demands are too high so can't rely on him. ryan is what he is, seems to have regressed a lot......I still maintain that he's a good player but likely a decent 2nd liner at this point. macarthur is done in my opinion, I don't think we'll see him again.....and if we do he's been gone so long that I question how effective he'll be.
that leaves turris, stone, Hoffman, brassard........I think if you add one solid top six winger to that mix then you're in good shape.
I wonder if the avs would be interested in ceci, smith, and a 1st for duchense or landeskog |

I think it's time we go all in and upgrade to the max. The only way we will ever get better is by trading our elite players for slightly more elite (on average) players. The time has come to begin a transition to the world of wild and freaky trade proposals no one will like, meaning they are actually fair value...with that in mind, I propose the following:
To OTT: Duchesne, Landeskog, Barrie, Beauchemin, COL 1st 2017
To COL: Karlsson, Ryan, Brassard, Wideman, OTT 2nd 2018 and 2019
A lateral move for both sides where COL significantly upgrades their D and reunites good buddies Karlsson and Weircioch, while OTT becomes the elite offsense of the Atlantic with a still decent powerplay QB, and restocks with assets for the future.
Ottawa wins the Stanley Cup in 2019, Colorado follows suit in 2021. With these lines, especially after Macarthur comes back, book it!
Dzingle-Turris-Stone
Hoffman-Duchesne-Landeskog
Macarthur-Smith-Pageau
Pyatt/Lazar-Kelly-Neil
Barrie-Methot
Phaneuf-Ceci
Beauchemin-Boro
Chabot
Anderson
Condon

I think any trade for those two would require one the sens better prospects going back the other way.
I agree that goaltending would be last on the list. Condon has been OK like you said.
On the top 6, what's the status on Macarthur? I heard he was supposeed to be back in the new year at some point.

Do you think Ottawa would be better situated with Zibanejad still on the roster? Assuming he isn't injured like now?
I suggested on the Flyers blog that it might be time to move Giroux because I think the Flyers are still some time from being a playoff contender and I liked what the Rangers did in getting Zibanejad has a help for the now and future.
I feel the flyers could look for a young player that could be about to break out. |

Hard to say. He sure looked good when he was with rangers prior to injury.
The feelings about him as a player were rather mixed to be honest. Some people liked him, others didnt. He was always a streaky player. One stretch of games he was putting up lots of points, the next he would disappear.
But he always started slow, at least in Ottawa. Didn't happen in NY, if that was just more of him being streaky, or him finally finding his groove, remains to be seen.

I was surprised by the trade. I thought he was hitting his stride and going to break out. I thought Rangers got a good deal also picking up a 2nd in the deal.

He seemed to be improving each year.
There was speculation that the Sens gave a second because the trade was made after his bonus was payed out, so the sens wouldn't have to pay it. |

Don't play games here, your entire core is worth Karlsson by himself, we're only adding the remaining players for cap considerations...

What do the Sens need right now?
I'd say 2 things:
1) Team harmony - no more Boucher/Ryan punch ups
2) Hope they continue to get to play opponent's backups on the 2nd of back-to-back games with the same regularity they have thus far... |

Just keep the team intact, expose Ryan (or trade to a cap floor team) and find two 3rd/2nd line players on free agency. We will surely overpay again when we make a trade.
Hoffman/Stone/Turris/Brassard (miss Zibanejad :yuck /Smith + 2 free agents should be fine.
Ceci will turn it around and with Methot, Karlsson, Phaneuf and Chabot we should be good there as well.
Goaltending ain't an issue. |

Giroux/Voracek/Schenn/Simmonds/Couturier as 5 of your top 6 guys. And that talented defense.... Sign Bishop and in 2 years you will have a shot. |

I would have liked to have kept him, but the owner is cheap and zibanejad is going to sign for $5 mill which is too much for them
I think they could have gotten brassard with it dealing zibanejad.
Giroux would be a good player to move. Want Bobby Ryan for him (kidding) |
