They need to reunite Hagelin-Sid-Sheary. They have a CF% 5v5 of 71.2%. It will continue to lead to goals from that line.

Give Malkin an upgrade on the RW of Hornqvist and let the depth funnel down.

If you're dead set on Sheary with Sid, I'd rather have

For all we know, Guentzel might have blown an assignment and got himself briefly demoted, which is fine as he's learning.

It makes it hard to authoritatively criticize a coaching decision like that without being behind the bench.

Yeah, I think it's past time to demote Bonino for a little while to try to get something, anything, from a third line.

RW: "Pittsburgh will face the Dallas Stars tonight and they are a popular team for people to link Marc-Andre Fleury to. I don’t like this as a fit. Dallas would need to unload one of their pricey goaltenders in order to make room for Fleury and Pittsburgh taking back one of those goalies is a non-starter."

Pretty sure Fleury's contract is pricier than Niemi's ($5.75M per with 2 years vs. $4.5M with 1 year) and their play is about the same this year. Fleury might bounce back, and he might not. Fleury now has a concussion history. The Pens HAVE to trade (or buyout) Fleury or lose Murray. Sorry, but taking back the cheaper Niemi (who is a capable backup) with only one year left on his contract to not lose Murray is NOT a non-starter. In fact, it might be the best deal the Pens can get.

Also looks like we don't have to worry about big pay raises for Bonino or Dumo, so ...

Absolutely. He's been garbage. Since he's playing for his next contract, he should be cautious on his spending over Christmas.

I think he was the guy that let Lee uncovered on the gw goal.

Really is a "what have you done for me lately" judgment, isn't it? He showed up in the playoffs and if he does again this year then he can lay on the ice every shift for all I care. Having Crosby Malkin kessel letang should be enough to carry you through the regular season.

Our biggest issues this year IMO have been:

1) Penalties - have been better, but we don't have the consistency yet.

2) Special teams - especially the PP. Why do we not set up Malkin for one-timers?

3) Lack of scoring from D - we need to be better at setting up shots from the point. Maatta, Letang and Schultz either need to be better, or we need to be better at setting them up. I always want more diagonal plays and that is one way of achieving this.

The other stuff goes in waves during the season, but I think these 3 need immediate addressing.

Sheary is producing with regularity at ES with Sid, but we don't need to rehash our little discussion lol.

You're not impressed by that CF% for hags-sid-sheary? That's good for best in the NHL right now.

When you're talking about signing the guy to a long term deal (4 years or more) for a nice chunk of salary cap it's concerning. He's been below average for most of his tenure in Pittsburgh. He had two really nice months in the playoffs and certainly deserves praise for it, but I expect more than one goal through a quarter of the season.

So yes I agree.... It's a "what have you done for me lately" judgment. That's pro sports.

From a few days ago.

Lets take a look at Sheary and Horny's production with all the centers on the Pens this season...

Sheary
With Sid
108:27 TOI, 64.09 CF%, 7 GF 4 GA, 67 scoring chances for, 25 against
31 high danger corsi events for, 12 against

With Cullen
50:49 TOI, 57.94 CF%, 3 GF 1 GA, 29 SCF, 20 against
20 HDCF, 11 HDCA

With Geno
17:07 TOI, 37.5 CF%, 1 GF 0 GA, 3 SCF, 3 SCA
1 HDCF, 0 HDCA

With Bones
29:52 TOI, 47.92 CF%, 1 GF, 0 GA, 10 SCF, 6 SCA
3 HDCF, 5 HDCA

Horny
With Sid
125:33 TOI, 55.67 CF%, 9 GF 5 GA, 75 SCF, 38 SCA
42 HDCF, 18 HDCA

With Cullen
35:10 TOI, 59,46 CF%, 2 GF 2 GA, 18 SCF 10 SCA
11 HDCF, 7 HDCA

With Geno
35:31 TOI, 53.95 CF%, 1 GF 3 GA, 23 SCF 11 SCA
13 HDCF, 6 HDCA

He's only played 5 minutes with Bones, so I'm not gonna use that.

Looking back at last season, where we have a larger sample side of Horny and Geno...

206:10 TOI, 58.73 CF%, 2 GF 8 GA, 82 SCF, 50 SCA
41 HDCF, 23 HDCA

These are all 5v5 by the way.

Yes, last year they had good underlying numbers, but 2 GF and 8 GA is brutal. I used to be of the mindset that they could probably work, but after digging further, it's not worth it. Sheary produces at nearly the same rate with Cullen than he does with Sid. And that is NOT a bad thing. Having Cullen and Sheary on the 4th line makes that line way more dynamic. Having Sid with Hornqvist has been proven successful over the last few years. Same goes with Kunitz, even last year, him and Sid on the ice produced 51 GF and 24 GA. Kunitz has been playing with Malkin this seasona has produced 10 GF and 4 GA. Roughly the same pace as he did with Sid. No matter how you slice it, having Sheary with Cullen in my eyes, is the better option, as it gives Cullen a player, that he has proven to play well with, more skill all the while keeping the 1st line just as dangerous as if Sheary was there.
