Is that the baseline for him keeping a job? Just like team USA he needs to be removed immediately.

I don't understand the vitriol people have for Torts. Sure, he's a little bit like the Trump of the NHL, but his teams have usually been successful. Team USA's failures didn't belong solely on his shoulders, and his time in Vancouver was a team failure. I want to see what he can do this year with the young roster, not write it off before it's even thanksgiving

Still not a fan , last season they should of kept Richards , even if the season was at a loss , not even a younger Scotty Bowman or Toe Blake could of salvaged an 0-8-0 mess. The available coaching options would of been far more interesting during the off season...

Torts is just incendiary , hockey games are not won by playing a high tempo style, shot blocking is considered antiquated according to the advanced stats community , he coaches on raw emotions and that can be dangerous in the long run , what I'm truly afraid is how long will it take before he alienates that lockeroom. And this is coming from a guy who really liked Hitch during his tenure, because he was cold and calculated before barking on someone.

In his final year in Ny , Gaborik waived his NTC just to come to Columbus in order to get away from him, that speaks volume.

That being said ,the goal for the California death row trip should be 3 pts out of 6...

People tend to forget that Torts had Vancouver 23-11-7 halfway through his season there before injuries hit and things unraveled from there. Not nearly as bad as people suggest, but he does need a roster to suit his style in order to be successful

He is stubborn and that I think is his biggest downfall. He isn't willing to adapt to the new times. Grit and Toughness only go so far.

Paul,

Lousy title, great blog.

to the good folks who are naysayers on this blog, I simply remind you time will tell. He's not a dinosaur coach, at least from what he said about blocked shots last season and how he wants the team to play this season. And who is to say that his system will not work into today's NHL? Last time I checked the team that lost a close series in the SCF in 2016 plays close to how Torts wants the CBJ to play now. and not every team in the NHL can purposely tank for two years in a row to get two absolute superstar centers with the #1 pick in the draft.

Well, he had the Sedins producing the least they ever had and Edler looked like a 6th Dman. He left and the team made the playoffs. Reports suggested he didn't attend practices or bother with video training. I'd be pretty nervous with him at the helm (and I was!).

Paul Maurice isn't getting fired. First of all, he's a good coach with a young team, they're going to have a bumpy start to the season. Secondly even for those who think he could be fired, remember that Claude Noel somehow kept his job a year longer than he should have....

Personally, I like Maurice and while I don't think the jets are going to be competing for the cup this year, I do see them competing for a lower seed playoff position once they find their identity as a team.

Not trying to beat a dead hose here, but when he was hired last year it has been reported that John Davidson had a sit down with Torts and told him he had to change if he ever wanted to coach in the league. So far it seems to me from what I read and see he is not the same coach he was in New York or Vancouver.

People can get better as coaches and as people. I think you have to allow for the fact that having a year on the sidelines watching helped to make him a better coach. It seems pretty clear he was never a good fit in Vancouver, but that does not mean he is a bad fit in Columbus.

Time will tell.

As a CBJ season ticket holder I do not think Torts Seat is even warm. He used last year to learn about his players and with the off season training camp he had is putting together a plan of action. He got the guys in fantastic shape and with the 5 days without a game he is now working on Chemistry. They looked like a different team over the weekend. He has been very to the point and honest during press conferences and interviews , which I find very refreshing. I don't like the coach speak you hear all the time. He has been very cordial with fans and is contributing in the community. I think people need to back off and let the man do his job without second guessing everything he does. There is nobody posting that has their name on the cup like he does. So what makes you think you know more than him?

You could easily make that argument for any "reclamation" project in sports. Doesn't mean it's a good argument.
