Other than that potentially serious cut to Ghost's face, you couldn't ask for a better start to the season

'Til Schenn gets in there, I think Coot's line could carry the scoring for the team! How 'bout that, an effective second scoring line...

Only saw some of the game last night, but I caught some more on the crack of dawn replay. Here are some observations:

Konecny has world class talent, as long as he doesn't wear down too much as the season goes on, he will be an impact player.

Provorov got stronger as the game went on. He led all Dmen in SH TOI, which says a lot about how much the coaching staff trusts him and is already depending on him. His addition to the team is huge.

Manning had a hell of a game and the Streit-Provorov pairing was excellent over the last 2 periods. Nick Schultz, while never going to be a huge asset at ES, was great on the PK and showed why he is valuable to this team. Ghost seemed a bit tentative after getting cut, but I really can't blame him. However, he's the least of my worries. AMac was fine, but he was still the least effective Dman of the bunch. If Manning keeps this level of play up, I think it will be AMac that sits when Gudas returns.

Amazing what Sean COuturier can do when he's paired with skilled, offensive linemates. The skills are there and he's usually the smartest player on the ice, that being said, assuming that line stays healthy and together, I could see Coots having a monster season along the lines of 25 goals and 55+ points. When you add those numbers to his already stellar defensive play, you are quite possibly looking at a Selke finalist.

I thought Giroux was ok. In his defense, neither Simmonds, nor Raffl excel at generating and creating offensive chances, so it really all falls on him until Schenn gets back. I'm looking forward to seeing him with Schenn for a whole season.

Apparently Boyd Gordon can do more than win faceoffs, who'd a thunk it?

Nick Cousins had a great game and, if he keeps it up, he is without question a solid 3rd line player. I also love how he just irritates the crap out of the other team.

Chris Vandevelde, while ok on the PK, is an AHL player at ES. I'd really like to see Lyubimov get a shot at his spot either tonight or against Chicago. When Schenn comes back, VDV needs to be the guy who sits.

Plus moving Raffl down will strengthen one of the lower lines. Flyers showed that even missing two of their top defenseman, and a top forward, they can beat a quality team. To be fair, L.A. was missing a few key players also.

The infusion of youth has really helped this team....the fact that ones a top six forward talent and the other is a top paring defenceman obviously helps....I actually liked Mannings game last night...if he could bring his game to that level every night then his role is easily a top 6 dman in the NHL. Not sure he can gain that consistency but he does have flashes of playing at a high level.
The future is getting brighter and brighter for this team and it's going to fun to watch.
I think it's important to all the other prospects to see Konecny and Provorov have success....it shows them that there are places available and that the next one could be there's .

I also thought Read was pretty good. That's not a very popular opinion, though.

I would love to see Lyubimov in for VdV tonight.

One game but I'll re iterate my notion that Manning today is better than Schultz today. No matter how many dark lords claim it false.

Sean Couturier scoring 2 last night. Crazy what could happen when you're got some offensively minded linemates.

He was coming alive offensively last year when he got hurt. Had that 15 points in 15 games stretch but went down. But, yes, playing with Konecny and Voracek can only help.

He was certainly the better of the 2 last night, though Schultz was extremely effective on the PK. Right now, I'd vote for AMac to be the guy who sits when Gudas returns.

Maybe he'll lead the team in 5 on 5 scoring per minute.

For the 2nd year in a row.

Not that it's a primary short-term concern by any means but the Flyers need to get Manning and MacDonald into enough games this season to all for some flexibility when it comes to figuring out the expansion draft.

Question assumes everyone is healthy. What are the odds on that?

But if they are, and they only want 7D, it has to be MacDonald getting sent down because he won't be claimed and Manning might. There's no point in getting Manning up to the 70 game mark in mid November then letting some other team take advantage of that.

I think MacDonald ghost have some chemistry and an easy move could be to keep them together til mdz returns. While gudas takes one of Schultz Manning place. I like Schultz but this is just another added future benefit of having Manning in.

AMac would be the first guy I sit when Gudas returns. It's hard to answer the question when it comes to MDZ as he won't be back for nearly a month or so. A lot will depend on things like:
Can Manning play consistently the way he did last night?
Will all the other D be healthy at that point?
Will a Dman be traded by that time? It's probably unlikely, but, if a team loses a couple of Dmen to injury during the first few weeks of the season, it could happen.

Good point. These things usually have a way of working themselves out which is why GM's usually say that you can never have enough good Dmen.

Just a conversation starter. But I agree. I debate with my dad a lot about it. I've been a big proponent for Manning as a 6th d man for the past year. I think when he doesn't over complicate things he's great in that role and actually physical which helps.

Another scenario could be one of the kids down on the farm shows they are ready and Hextall moves out one of these guys. As far as Gudas ...he needs to show more discipline in the future or he may not be as indispensable as everyone seems to suggest.
