Because you know exactly how much Gaudreau is asking for and how he'll perform over the next decade.
If he's willing to be reasonable and sign a long term deal around 7.5 million, that's great. If he's asking for 9 or 10 million a year, the Flames really can't take that risk and a bridge deal is a better option.
You just worry about stuffing hogies in your face and giving people stupid songs to have stuck in your head. (I swear I'm going to kill you for that "sweet Caroline" sh1t)

Agree 100%. Need a bigger sampling than two years. Having players like Pat Kane talk about what kind of special talent he is doesn't help at the negotiation table mind you.

Bridge deals always lead to a player getting more in the long run, plus the fact he should be and eligible UFA after the bridge deal(?), so just bite the bullet now and get the long term contract done. Then there are no worries for the next 6-7 years. I am a little pissed at GM BT for not getting this contract done and signed before the worlds, and I know I kept harping on it, but Johnnys going to bank an extra 500k + a season with his stellar World Cup play. Usually appreciate your input Hunk, but a bridge deal doesn't favor the Flames organization IMO.

The point of a bridge deal isn't to take them to unrestricted free agency. The Flames own his rights for 5 more years, so a bridge deal would be something like 3. He gets a more team friendly contract for 3 years and then has to prove he's worth the massive payday he wants.
Since there's been nothing leaked about Gaudreau's contract demands, you can't really be pissed at either side. If he's demanding 9 or 10 million, can you really be pissed at Treliving for balking at that?
A bridge deal isn't idea, but, again, if he wants 10 million a season, he's going to have to cement himself as a top 5 player over the next few years in order for the Flames to end up having to pay him more than that.

Eric Francis has mentioned that the flames want something like 6.3 per year and Johnny wants 8
The "Gio Cap" has been a rumour for a while, though so far there is nothing to suggest that it's actually a thing. Monahan's contract is about what everyone was expecting with or without the Gio thing.
I read somewhere that Gaudreau's agent was asking for $9 million (though for the life of me I can't find where), in which case it's no wonder Treliving has taken his time. Johnny isn't a $8 million a year player yet, let alone 9.
I fully expect the deal to be around 7-7.5 a year for 6 or 7 years when all is said and done, which is completely reasonable.
Heard from a flames staffer that Johnny wants to play near his hometown, and so doesn't want a long term deal. IF they are as far apart on both money and term as is rumoured, I'm starting to not really liking the odds he gets signed.

I'm too sexy for my shirt. So sexy it hurts.
I'm a model. You know what I mean I do my little turn on the catwalk.
Hopefully we'll just get Giordano signed, everyone will have their opinion of whether the cap hit sucks or not, and it won't be news anymore. He can't possibly get paid the 9 million he's asking for.
