McCabe is the type of glue that every team needs. A solid, solid D-man with some impressive upside. Bogo and McCabe are a fine second pairing in my opinion.

"Gorges acquitted himself quite well for the Sabres last season as while playing above his talent-level and one could easily put him next to Bogosian this season"

He's not a top 4 defender. I'm hoping he's actually gone by deadline day and Guhle is in the lineup.

Pick one to keep - Gorges or Franson?

Franson. Easily.

Both are slow, both are bottom pairing D men, one actually can serve a useful purpose on a PP.

Gorges is a 13-15 min 6-7 D man

don't forget, guhle can't go to Rochester...it's either the big club or back to junior...if he makes the team out of camp, which is a possibility, that jumbles things a bit

Franson did very little on the pp last year...he only had one pp goal all season and three of his six pp assists come in the month of October...

in 25 games post Christmas break, before he was sidelined for the season, Franson had one goal, four assists, was a minus-3 and logged over 17 minutes of ice-time only twice...

in that same 25 game span gorges had one goal, three assists, was a minus six and logged under 17 minutes twice

Franson also has a lower cap hit, though not by much, and one year left, as opposed to two. If you could get rid of Gorges this year, it means both are off this roster by the summer, which puts the Sabres in much better position than they are today.

Franson sucks. He's slower then Stephen Hawking in a wheel chair. I wish he was never signed.

Isn't Stephen Hawking always in a wheelchair?

I'd imagine he uses the wheelchair for more mobility. Wouldn't he be slower if he wasn't in his wheelchair?

I just hate this guy on this team. He was horrible last year and putting him on the PP is not a good idea. I never liked the signing. Franson takes a spot that Guhle would probably get.

He's still more mobile than cement skater Franson.

Gorges more so IMO. No one wants two years of 3.9 for JG. Franson at 1 year is move able.

I never understood the signing...yeah, he had some good years in Toronto and fans up there thought they could get a king's ransom in a trade, but he went to Nashville and failed miserably...plus, he's a right-handed shot who admittedly can't/won't play the left side...

maybe murray just wanted a veteran nhl'er to plug into the lineup and he was the only one available

imo Franson gets moved at the trade deadline with gorges sticking...and 3.9 is not an albatross contract by any stretch of the imagination

That's fair. Both contracts aren't good but at least we'll lose Franson this year, hopefully at the deadline.

I was puzzled by it too and definitely not a good signing by Murray. He over reached there.

Guhle-Nelson>Gorges-Franson...as of today

They may struggle for the first 20 games or so but I bet by the mid way point they adjust and look far better if for no other reason than they can actually skate. Plus you save like 7 mil there.

At this point, you won't see much of a difference between a developing Guhle or whatever FA is out there willing to sign for the FA minumum.

Signing McCabe for under 1.5mil for three seasons was a great move. It's a bargain today and an increasingly bigger one going forward. Well done, GMTM.

Good stuff, Michael.

Speaking of "good," that's what I think the Sabres will be this year.
