Nah try Messier and the refs.
As for EDM, try Semenko and McSorley

The refs were brusiers on a line with Gretz...i see
Mess was the 2nd line center...
Gretz never had McS and Cementko on his line.
Keep trying, you obviously have no clue. |

No one said anything about having an enforcer on your line. If you think you watched hockey in the 80s and thought Gretzky was not given preferential treatment by the refs and didn't have guys like Semenko and McSorely protecting him, then you havent watched sh!t. It was an unwritten rule you could not touch gretzky without consequences.
Keep trying! Then again I understand how you feel since Gretzky did call the Devils a mickey mouse team |

Gretzky was shifty with excellent vision. There were plenty of enforcers in the league, the Oilers greatest rivals in the Flames had a really good one in Tim Hunter. He wasn't afraid of anyone..but interesting enough Gretzky wasn't getting tagged by the Flames because of Messenger, or McSorley, or Semenko. Not even the refs.
He was also resilient. He got back up after hits regularly...and preceded to play more determined...generally taking games over.
But, yeah, keep the tinfoil hat secure. Looks good on you. |

Not really trying to inject in the squabble but as an aside I don't think Gretzky really brought as much disdain upon himself with the way he acted on the ice. I think when Crosby is at his best he is playing a gritty/emotional/agitation type game that gets on the nerves of his opposition (as expected). Crosby isn't above getting his hands dirty in little battles or scrums.
Crosby is an elite skilled player, but I think his intensity level and compete is a big part of what separates him from other elite skilled players. This is also what makes him unbearable to play against especially in important games.
I think the evolution of the sport has just made it that much more difficult to separate yourself skill-wise from the rest. I don't think it was as much the case in Gretzky's era. I think Gretzky didn't have to have as much edge to his game because he was basically so much more intelligent and skilled than his competition that he essentially helped evolve the sport in a major way. |

Oh so no response to my argument and now you go on a tangent? lol ok
Without a doubt Gretzky was shifty, but as in the words of the canadian broadcaster Don Cherry, taking a run at Gretzky was like spitting on the Canadian flag. You just don't do it |

In a way I agree with the last paragraph, but as far as Crosby being at his best I disagree. I think this year's series vs. SJ showed it. Crosby didn't care who was hitting him or trying to agitate him. I remember when He avoided post-whistle squabbles and just focussed on his game.
Sure he was feisty with Joe during the game, but he almost gave zero retailiation when Thornton began crosschecking from behind. He maintained his composure and level-headedness. A huge difference from the Philly series of years ago. |

Yeah you nailed it. I conflated Crosby playing with intensity with him getting overly emotional to the point of being distracted.
I think Crosby is at his best when he is playing with that intensity and edge that agitates others but then he ignores the drama they try to create. When his intensity is pure business, whistle to whistle, and afterwards he has no time for the drama of others. I feel like sometimes you can actually see this kind of indifference to the drama in his face after a play, when others are trying to get to him, he just has eyes like he isn't even aware of their bullpoop and is instead purely focused on the game. |

I don't know what changed Crosby. Honestly I don't. As a Pens fan who never misses a game there were nights I wanted to throw a brick through my TV. He was taking it too far. OK, he was injured. First the neck and then the broken jaw. But it was hard to swallow his anger getting the best of him. Worse yet, as captain the better players followed his example of over reacting. You can't play good hockey no matter how skilled you are if you want to personally get or inflict justice.
Suddenly, things changed. I can only speculate it was the coach, Sullivan. How he sold Crosby on not retaliating is speculation? I just can't see any other explanation that is plausible. Whatever it was, Crosby is focused and not over reacting or retaliating. As a fan, I'm delighted to see him once again at his best. |

As far as the game goes, so long as Torts is the coach we can expect dumb penalties and goonish shenanigans. Canada stayed focus while we were head hunting and lacking focus. As hockey evolves it seems skill is coming to the fore. I believe the USA team could have been better chosen defensively to allow mobility and skill to drive the puck and play offensively. That was not done and so we have an ill equipped team to handle the skill of the Canadians. I do not expect this USA team to accomplish much. I am more excited to see team NA. They posses enough speed and skill offensively and to some extent, defensively to protect the puck and drive play. Murray is no slouch in net either. Can they beat the Canadians? Probably not, but they can give anyone a scare on a given night and as a fan of good hockey what else can you ask for? Lets hear it for skill! |

In a tournament like this, teams don't need great stats or play - they only need a little luck good tending & to win. It's quite possible to see the best team not win. With the antics of Torts, there's every chance the USA cause an upset as long as Quick repeats. Puck luck & tending may just steal this Cup? (is there a cup of some sort or shield?), & run! |

Just heard his name as Chara hit him behind the net. You could hear a groan from the crowd in Ottawa. |
