Cool footnote about Bill Barilko: A truly sensational story brought to life by the Hip. I did several fly in fishing trips out of Cochrane. Have to say some of them were spectacular. Pike and Walleye fishing was world class - and we were the only boat on a large lake. Can't imagine what a trip like that would have been like in 1951.

A pretty grim footnote in Toronto's history (August 16, 1933) when antisemitism was accepted in Toronto and a predominantly Jewish baseball team was attacked by Nazi sympathizers, fascists and racists. The fist fights lasted over 6 hours. Now more than 80 years later thanks to Jackie Robinson and others, African Americans can play baseball, and there are even 7 (yes that's the number) Jews playing major league baseball. Two of them are Jays - Pillar and Scott Feldman.

On the night of August 16, 1933, after a softball game at Toronto’s Christie Pits Park, a gang of young men unfurled a white banner. On it was a black swastika, symbolic of Nazi Germany’s persecution of Jews. It was directed at a team of mostly Jewish teens from Toronto’s Harbord Playground. Anti-Semitism had been mounting in Toronto, then an overwhelmingly British, Protestant city. Groups called “swastika clubs” had formed to intimidate Jews. The banner sparked a riot. Youth from Italian and Ukrainian backgrounds rallied to the Jewish side. The six-hour brawl marked a turning point for resistance to anti-Semitism. It led to a Toronto ban on the swastika.

On this day 65 years ago, Leafs defenseman Bill Barilko and dentist Henry Hudson lost their lives in a plane crash returning from a fishing trip. Barilko scored the winning goal for the Leafs in the 1951 Stanley Cup Final, Toronto's fourth Cup victory in five seasons
