Interesting approach Dan. Nice to see something different.

But you're still in the dog house for that Barkov blog.

Also, I'm not so sure Crouse plays for ARZ. I think they are better off sending him down to junior to further develop his offensive skills and so that ARZ only owes two 3rds.

It's a little premature yet, but signs are pointing to Lawson being a poor selection for the Panthers at 11 which is not surprising considering the amount of people who were saying he was rated far too high prior to the draft. He slid a bit but I think he should have slid into Chychrun territory.

In another salary dump AZ takes Bolland. Amazing how AZ year after year refuses to improve its team. It won't spend the money to add quality players, but happily takes on salary from others(Datsuk, Bolland, Pronger) to hit the cap floor. I get it that these players are not paid by AZ and are just paper moves, bypassing the intent of the cap floor.
The league owes it to the fans of AZ to force this team to play by the intent of the cap rules of the cba, which was to ice a competitive team.

What are the signs? I haven't seen him play but based off of his point totals it looks like he progressed significantly playing in the O last season (over a ppg in regular season + playoffs). You seen him play or something? Stats look good...

People keep saying this as if they didn't get anything out of the Datsyuk and Bolland deals (Pronger was pretty much pure cap move). They got Chychrun out of the Datsyuk deal and Crouse out of the Bolland deal. That's two very solid prospects added on top of an already stacked prospect list. Everything's dim right now, but the future looks pretty bright for that franchise imo.

Unless there is a fairly large trade in the works where a big contract is added, this is a pretty gross overpayment. Unless that space is needed now, they would have been better off waiting and watching the price for unloading Bolland drop each year. They got nothing back for a lottery pick besides cap space, which is fine if they need it soon - not so much if they don't.

Nah, sorry I didn't mean signs as in Lawson showing signs. I agree fairly solid progression. I meant more as in there were highly skilled players left on the board, and it was well known at the time (thinking mainly of Barzal and Connor). Now it is starting to look like those players value has risen more than Crouse's, but that is pretty much just speculation on my part based on reading reactions to the Crouse trade.

My point was that at the time of the draft there was a lot of disagreement on how high one should select a player of Crouse's style who projects as more of a middle 6 forward instead of a top line player. The argument was that top 15 picks shouldn't be used on players who project into more depth roles because those players can be usually acquired fairly easily in other ways.

Trading a former 11th overall pick for a 2nd and 3rd rounder hardly seems like a win-win.

The Panther could have kept Crouse and just dolled Bolland on LTIR for the year.

Well Bolland is actually getting paid by them. He has 3 more years left on his deal. Just 5.5 million for 3 year.

The Yotes have a deep pool of prospects ready to make the team in the next 2 years, and will have at least 5, if not 8 or 9 guys on ELCs, so they will be better, and need to eat some cap space to stay above the floor.

The moves aren't that bad, as they have added b-level prospects along the way in exchange for taking on cap space.

They are heading in the right direction. Not this coming year, but next season they will make a big jump as Domi, Duclair, Strome, Dvorak, Chychrun and Perlini settle in and the old core guys are sent out to pasture.

Yeah, they'll probably suck again this year, and add another top 5 pick to the mix.

as an overage player in the OHL, they are relatively average to mediocre. His draft year was very weak offensive numbers. Not that he won't be an NHL player, but he won't be a 1st line stud at 11th overall. Hes more slated to be a 3rd liner with the potential to be a good 2nd liner if he hits his potential

Dan, I really like that you did something different here. Also, I've enjoyed reading your stuff for the most part (sans the Barkov blog). But, man, next time please shut the doors behind you. I kept waiting for something extremely creepy to come out of your cracked closet door.

Not gonna sugar coat it. You shouldn't have to trade a #11 overall to dump garbage. It is what it is, and I guess they had to. Az had the hammer on this deal.

I think the Panthers did the right thing , besides , I just don't see Crouse fitting in that roster, the core up front seems set with Huberdeau,Barkov, Bugstad (sorry too lazy to look up his name) and Smith , add to that a rotating door of free agents that the panthers will surely not have trouble acquiring.

FLA: gets rid of bad contract, is in "win now" mode so they can trade for something at the deadline of significance and can flip those ok picks from AZ
AZ: gets help towards reaching the cap floor for 17-18 and 18-19 and gets a top prospect

win-win

not a chance does crouse make the team.

arizona will only end up taking a cap dump and giving up two 3rds to get crouse.
I like what Chaykra is doing (Crouse, Deangelo, Keller, Chychrun)

I don't like the trade either but I get it. He potentially could be Jagr replacement next yr. I would have rather see them give up a d prospect instead like matheson

So the NHLPA is ok with an organisation taking jobs away from its members by circumventing the league rules? Isn't there 'something' in there 'somewhere' 'suggesting' an organisation supplies a fit & proper roster that 'should' be as competitive as 'possible'?

Trading for a contract that has the actual player pointing his bum to the ground on another continent is just outrageous. It's the height of amateurism for a 'pro' (cough cough spew your guts up), organisation to allow that to happen. Detroit signed that contract & its Detroits for the long run in my opinion. If Dats was still playing in the NHL then ok - but not even being in the country should close all doors that lead to a trade for that contract.

Yotes could put together a decent team, but doing what they are (not talking about tanking either cause we ALL know don't we ), is just kicking poop in everyone that loves the sports mouth!
