Thank god. A trade for Shattenkirk would be he exact type of move that the Rangers need to avoid making for a little while.
We went for it the past few years. Time to take a step back and reset for a couple. |

Agreed, let's waste the last years of Hank's prime. Goalies like him come around all the time. |

St. Louis is not going to give up Shattenkirk unless it's going to be an overpayment from the Rangers who don't even have a first round pick! The smart play is to just wait till next year when Shattenkirk is a free agent who wants to play for the NYR and then we get him for free! 1 year more will not take Hank out of his prime! I believe both Girardi and Staal will have bounce back years and so will Nash! Hell, even Hayes will be out of his 2nd-year itch! I like the new additions and I just think now that we have some new talant for our bottom 3 and 4 we should resign Dominic Moore and that 55% face off wins. With better players on the 4th line I think Moore will also bounce back! Just because a player has a bad season doesn't mean you toss them away! |

They should trade a draft pick for a shotgun. Then go out back of MSG and shoot Girardi and Staal to clear up cap space. |

Very good. That in no way addresses my point.
I mean, if you are creating a straw-man argument that since there were relatively young and no-name goalies in one Stanley Cup final and now you're saying that that will now always be the case, you can make that argument but, again, it has nothing to do with what I said and, also again, it is a straw-man.

You may not have been aware, but you can buy a shotgun for cash. Very cheap, in fact. No need to give up a draft pick. |

It's not like this team isn't in a position to contend with the current roster while Hank is still playing at a high level. I just don't want to see any more assets being dealt for players that may walk on us.
Not to start up another Yandle trade discussion, but how much nicer would our roster look right now if we not only had Buchnevich being penciled in but Duclair too?
If we're running away with the division by the deadline and are firing on all cylinders, okay maybe we make the move for Shattenkirk to go for it again. But I'd much rather go into this season retaining our 1st next year and Buchnevich and Skjei too. Hank's good but we have 2 or 3 other quality goalie prospects to take over after him. |

Hank is more than "good"

His advanced stats show he is basically the whole team. "Quality prospects" don't really mean anything. Plenty of teams have had dozens of quality goalie prospects and the vast majority turn out to be nothing.
Build on what you have now when you're trying to win now. You can't try to win now and try to rebuild at the same time. |

Ok you convinced me. Let's trade Buchnevich and two 2nds to have Shattenkirk for a year then |

Rangers actually do have a first round pick, but I agree, I wouldn't trade what St Louis wants for one year of Shattenkirk
I have never believed the Shattenkirk rumors anyway.
The Brassard trade convinced me that the Rangers never ever let their actual plans out to "the sources" |

I will concede that of late it appears you do not need an elite goalie to win the cup. but I will also argue that it sure does help. the rangers went for the past few years, and im sure no one would be complaining about not trading yandle or trading for yandle or even signing Dan Boyle, if the rangers had won the cup. you have to take some risk to win the cup. it didn't work out.
I am in the get shatty camp, mostly because I think it does both in help us now and in the long term. if they can do a trade then sign(hand shake agreement) with shatty then its a win-win. |

The Rangers almost pulled the trigger on a Brad Richards trade when he was a pending UFA with Dallas but opted to wait until the summer and sign him without giving up any assets. I hope they do the same with Shatty. |

Both teams had considerable more talent than the Rags. Your defense is laughable absent McDonough and maybe Skjei in time. I laugh at those who suggest Shattenkirk wouldn't help your defense. |

Why does everyone seem so sure he will sign with the Rangers? I totally get the allure of NYC and all of that, but there will still be many teams bidding on him, and we have seen many times before guys say theyd like to play in a certain place, but when a team offers an extra mil a year and a longer contract, minds get changed pretty easily.
I know he is from the area and may have said hed like to play out East, but i could see NYR, NYI, BOS, BUF, even NJD and wash (if they clear cap) all having solid offers out there. While i agree with you giving up assets now when he may become a UFA could be a waste, they would also get that whole year to be the only team talking to him to get him to extend and sell him on the team, so it may not be that dumb of an idea.

Well...it is the Rangers thread, so it would be kind of odd if they were all talking about him signing with Boston or something.
Also: no room for him on the Islanders. |
