Rick...question, what self imposed salary structure? With the offers sent out in the last few years (6.6m to resign stastny, 7m to try and keep ROR) and MacKinnon making more than 6m now, I think thats just a myth

I don't know how anyone can complain about this deal. Great cap hit for a 50-point defenseman and Barrie will still be young enough to cash in big on his next deal when this one expires. Everyone wins.

The thing about that is he never got to be with the Oilers, so he's likely very depressed. I doubt you'll get to post it often

The Avalanche just wanted to sign him before the arbitrator ruled so that they could still trade him to Edmonton in the first year of his contract.... right?

Look on the bright side, you can always trade for JML in Boston.

im really shocked at how there was a large amount of Oilers fan and media who were convinced that Barrie was going to be traded to Edmonton. Staples being the main guy pushing this charge.

From what was reported, there were primarily talks bw the 2 teams around the time of the draft as the Oilers were the ones pushing hard for a Dman, but the ask was Hall or Drai...oilers didnt want to do that price for Barrie so they moved to the Larsson talk. Eberle, Yak/Reinhart, etc type deals were never realistic

The 2 teams were never in serious talks, but that didnt stop Staples for making this fan base believe you were hours away from getting him.

Staples was the worst person to listen to when it came to Barrie. He kept on quoting wrong information and misquotes, never backing it up. Av Fans on twitter would call him out all the time and the vast majority of the time his only response was google it.

The amount of times he wrong Roy things Barrie is a 5th Dman was staggering, Roy has never been on record of saying that, only place it shows up with Denver Post writter Terry Frei mentioning it in a blog of his and doesnt even write it in a manner as a qoute from Roy.

I know its Hockey in July and he was just filling air time, but man did he play that fan base for a fiddle, getting hits and clicks to his junk

Yeah, to be honest I never expected a trade but the amount of chatter regarding a potential move made plenty of Oiler fans dare to dream. It wasn't just Staples either, while he certainly boasted how he expected a trade, that was compounded with guys like Ryan Rishaug talking how the Oilers need a guy like Barrie... which of course people took as Oilers will get Barrie.

Replying to DonzoBean:

Go to the 'Hawks thread and challenge the "resident expert", self-identified as GOD, and more commonly known as " Wiz", about this contract. He was female doging and whining about it in comparison to Keith's AAV, signed under a previous CBA, six+ (frank)ing years ago.

Looks like a fair deal given today's climate.

Cheers!

A little fyi if you want to use to fuel the fire with him.

Current comparison

At roughly the same point of their careers when signing 5.5m contracts at roughly the same age

Keith signed his contract December 3, 2009 at 26 years old of age
Barrie signed his contract July 31, 2016...at 25 years of age

so I have no idea how that guy is jumping off a cliff. Keith is getting paid 7.5m-8m salary vs Barrie having basically a flat salary for 4 years ranging b/w 5-6m

Wow the Avs are committed to being handcuffed for the next couple of years while right up against the cap with no room for movement...sure Iginla comes off the books next year but holy crap...good luck if anything goes sideways during the season...guaranteed this does not end well...

um? Have you even looked at their cap situation. 12.7m comes off the books in Iginla, Stuart, Tyutin, and Mitchell and have all their core locked up, with only notables in Zadorov and Grigorenko who need to be resigned

You have no idea what you are talking about, so go along you troll, maybe one day you will understand how cap structure and roster out looks actually work

Turns out I'm communicating with a child so there's that...no surprise on this site...there is no question they are up against it this year and next...good luck with all that...simply put - they're borderline screwed financially...someone will have to go sooner than later but that's how it works

Yobble you have clearly no friggen idea what you're talking about!!! If I were you I'd be worried about Edmonton when you sign mcdavid to the biggest nhl contract of the cap era in 2 seasons instead of worrying about us! Our salary structure is fine until next year when we get 12M+ in salary off the books like Coga said!

Avs are screwed that for 1 season they have a full 23 man Roster and are 1m away from the cap, 3.6m of that is dead buyout money. Oh no they better fire Sakic and the rest of the boys for this...how dare they get their core (Landy, Mack, Duchene, Barrie, EJ, Varly) all locked up for long term deals and still have cap room next season. Those idiots

Wow the team better start trading away good players to make some cap room this year just in case they have mystery reasons of adding cap mid season!

what a mook
