Todd Cordell: New Jersey Devils Sign Brandon Gormley

I really like it. I don't have a lot of hope he will be a great player but I do think it is there and for 650,000 who cares

Where'd the NHL17 article go? b/c the numbers were from last year's game?

Great move. If nothing ever comes of it he plays in the AHL. Perhaps a call up later. if he can become a 6/7 Dman someday, its a big win. No risk, low potential reward, love to see Shero do this.

dont get your hopes up with him, he wasnt bad but wasnt great either. Worry about the guys mental capacity, as soon as he was demoted to the AHL to work on his game, the guy just quit and was a mess down there.

If hes motivated and makes the team out of camp then its a good move, if hes sent back down again, just hope hes not taking a development AHL spot from a kid at least

Pretty decent pick up. Changing the subject, but I better not see dsp on the top line this year, he's not a top 6 player.

Thanks for the insight. How would you compare him to Gelinas?

Boucher is not very good defensively and putting him on his off-wing will only exacerbate this issue. It may also make him more vulnerable to having the puck stripped off his stick with how he'd have the puck towards the middle of the ice as he skates with it.

While he played RW in juniors, the skill level is much improved in the NHL and it's far more difficult to keep control of the puck on your off-wing than it is in juniors. He definitely has a great shot, but I'd keep him away from his off-wing unless it's on the PP.

Gelinas has more offensive potential than Gormley, but at times last year looked good making smart decisions with the puck and can hit an outlet pass.

Would rather have Gelinas 10 times out of 10

Prefer having him as a potential call up than Helgeson/Hrabanka when injury strikes. And definitely an upgrade over Warsofsky as a #7 d. poop all this guy has to do is be Pete Harrold and its a win.

DSP may be 1st line RW, he's not a liability and the Henrique/Hall pair is already out there. Zajac had good chemistry with Palmieri so I'd expect them to be on line 2 together (maybe with Boucher) and Cammalleri on line 3 to limit his minutes.

That sounds decent. So which team do you think will pot the fewest goals this year?

Hes fine as a 7th guy, flashes of brilliance that you start to think he could be a Top 4 guy then he will go brain dead and get caught flat footed doing some dumb stuff

Good to see shero wasn't set with the defense like he said. Though this doesn't really do much.

I don't see Cammy playing on the 3rd line. When he was healthy he was our best forward last season and I think Hynes will find a way to get him in the top six. My guess is its him that plays on the right with Hall and Henrique.

I'm thinking they are going to want to spread out the scoring, something like:

Hall-Henrique-DSP
Boucher-Zajac-Palmieri
Cammalleri-Zacha-Bennett
Blandisi-JJ/Fidler- Kalinin

Although 2-3 of them could be injured at any given time. It did feel nice to fill out lines and not type Tootoo, Ruutu, Gionta or Farnham.

The A-Devils need defensemen and Albany is where Gormley is most likely to play.

We'll see, but unless you have elite forwards it rarely works. And again, Camm was our best forward when healthy. Doubt Hynes wants to make him work with a rookie and an unknown when he could have a decent top line.

Agreed. If you're not supporting Hall to be the all-star he can be then you're doing it wrong.

Good signing. I was hoping we would grab him as a depth d-man.

When I would watch him on the Wildcats he was never a huge offensive threat. He was just really good at controlling play. One skill he always seemed to have was a strange ability to create space in the offensive zone (i.e. the puck wouldn't get passed him and behind the blue line or rushing defenders didn't seem to phase him).

NHL game is a lot faster and players are much smarter. In order to be effective he'll just need to make quicker, smarter decisions. He's still young, if he's given more chances and doesn't let his confidence get shaken he could be a very good 16-18 minute a night #5 or 6.

I don't really get this move unless its just taking a flyer on guy they believe has real upside and want some cheap depth. This moves make me think Shero is operating under a somewhat tight budget and he can't go out and spend for a quality defenseman. Our payroll is quite low and despite some big contracts coming off the books we've spent very little.

Everyone makes fun of Peter Chiarelli for the Hall - Larsson trade but Chairelli did go out and signed Milan Lucic to fill in some of the offensive void. Shero has not brought anyone we can expect to reasonably replace Larsson. And the reality is our D wasn't really as brilliant as Cory Schneider made them look last year so we could have used the help before moving Larsson.

None of this is meant as a complaint against Ray. He's made great moves. It just makes me wonder what the real plan is and are our owners more interested in Cash then Cups.

I don't think this move provides any insight as far as the organizations overall game plan, just a low cost depth signing. I would'nt read too far into it. This gives Merrill and company a little competition which can't hurt.

The good players out there aren't only looking for money, it is commitment also. The Devils really could be a good team in a year or so, I wouldn't want to have any commitments for a stop gap now that will be cumbersome for the club in a year or two.

Patience my friend, I see much bad-assery ahead.

I think that's right. In addition a few teams salary caps are becoming problematic and I assume Shero wants flexibility in case any offers come his way (think Leddy & Boychuk a few years ago).
