Didn't Stamkos also say all along that he wanted to re-sign with Tampa? That didn't prevent a year's worth of 'he's coming home' speculation from fans and media. How is this different? |

So you're argument is it requires early onset CTE for GTA bred superstars to sign with the Leafs? |

Mike Augello: Ending The Savior Syndrome, All Quiet On The Enroth Front - mikeinbuffalo
This is all fine and dandy, but I guaran-franking-tee that if he hasn't signed a new contract by puck drop of the 2017-18 season, people will start speculating.
Rightly or wrongly, but they will start speculating.
And Toronto will be atop of that mythical list of new destinations. |

Pretty sure Leafs would rather trade for a goalie to dump a contract as opposed to adding one in free agency. |

I doubt the Leafs had any serious interest in Stamkos, given the price point that would be required to sign him. This is a cap league, so signing any overpriced free agent would work counter to a teams ability to become, and remain, competitive in the long run.
Stamkos did do the Leafs a favor when he re signed in Tampa, and hopefully Tavares will sign early in New York, that way Shanahan and company won't waste valuable time pretending like they're interested just to coddle impatient fans. |

The Leafs took the time to meet with him and make their pitch.
Stamkos took the time to sit with MLSEL brass and hear the pitch.
So there was interest on both sides.
In the end, not enough on his part. |

That only happens if your dealing with a sh!tbird like Jim Benning but usually the outcome is worth the wait

only ones worth doing that for would be 5M+ guys... too much commitment - even if you dump a Lupul or Michalek in exchange.
Lou will invite 2-3 guys to camp on tryout contracts. |
