Adam Proteau: Hockey's advanced stats proponents best served by a teaching spirit As the debate over advanced stats in hockey continues to rage, it's important that proponents of quantifiable information reach out in a conciliatory tone, rather than with snark and ridicule.

An when one is beat use the, "well at least play nice" card. Quantify the numbers you have all you want, you can't quantify the human element so there will always be a difference of opinion.

Good tone.

In watching some regular season games last year, I cringe when commentators refer to Corsi and other new metrics as "fancy numbers", there is nothing fancy about adding all attempts at the net into one figure, nor is it "advanced". It only shows a resistance to learning something new.

Yet the fact is, these methods are currently unproven. Once more teams hire advanced stats people and actually listen to them (Subban trade), only then can we judge the value of advanced stats. Years to come.

Data collection methods have to improve greatly, before we can fully trust even simple analytics such as Corsi. Currently they have value in helping show us what happened on the ice. Why it happened, takes further analysis.
