I think Hoffman had difficult negotiations with the Sens last year also. Not sure what the problem is but maybe it's in his best interest to take a one year deal and leave his options open for next year. I'd certainly love my team to trade for him... |

Maybe we should drop the sky is falling routing regarding Hoffman and Ceci getting re-signed.
It is possible, just possible, that they are just being fiscally intelligent and not throwing big money at average players just to make the HB crowd happy..

It's pretty funny how quick some people are to spend other people's money.
Now, I wouldn't call Hoffman or Ceci average players, but I agree that people have to try to keep their $hit together about these two RFA signings. Plus, I seriously question the perception that Hoffman was doing the team some kind of a favour by playing out his contract last year. I was surprised at the value of the arbitration award, but that's the chance you take when you go to arbitration. And if that experience has made Hoffman stick to his asking price more strongly this time, then would it really be surprising if that meant the negotiations took a substantial amount of time to resolve?
Dorion's job is to get the right multi-million dollar deals in place for Hoffman and Ceci - not get them done by July 21st because a bunch of bloggers are getting antsy. |

Do you want Dorion to throw money around like Tim Murray and give out a bunch of stupid contracts that paralyze the club.
Dorion is doing an excellent job, our team is way better then they were at game 82.
Dorion is all over this, just be patient. |

I agree to be patient BUT as long as they reach a deal before the arbitration ruling! It would be a huge disappointment if he gets the 1 year arb ruling... |

Why worry about this? Everyone knows the deal will get done, everyone knows the deal will be multiple years. |

We DON'T know it will be for multiple years. That is just the hope. The concern is that it won't be multiple years because, from the Hoffman camp, when he becomes a UFA he gets to chose where he plays and has all the leverage which would lead to a MUCH larger payout. |

Never done with the Sens, but I would be quite pissed. I'd also be calling for the head of ownership and management. |

Ceci has little leverage and there isn't much they can do to screw it up.
With Hoffman, the management group essentially pledged to open the wallet if he proved the one year wasn't a fluke. He did it, and although we have no idea where each side sits numbers-wise (credit to both sides for keeping the negotiations private), 4-5 years at $5-5.5 per seems to be the consensus sweet spot.
Rielly Smith had 25-25-50 this season, the same age as Hoffman was last year when he had 26-22-58 and Smith cashed in to the tune of 5X$5M.
If it comes out that Hoffman is asking for something ridiculous, then I think a lot of opinions would change, but I think based on past history (including the alleged promise to Alfie that was allegedly broken that resulted in his sojourn to Motown) hypotheses have been formed about how they are going about their business.
I don't think anyone is suggesting Ottawa break the bank (unless Hoffman is ), but paying one of their top forwards market value isn't too much to ask.
Especially considering the FA group next year (very few quality under-30 players) and Hoffman is easily looking at 6x$6M |

That's why its a worst case scenario if a 1 year deal is awarded through arbitration. Not only would it show the incompetence of management but it would also crush his trade value and would obviously would be a UFA at the end of the season.
They will re-sign him to a long term deal.
Please god |

This is only 1 side of it, if Ottawa is offering Mike Hofman $25 million, and he wants to bet he doesn't blow out a leg or his back or get a bad concussion, he could play out the year.
I can't think of the last NHL'er who signed a 1 year deal before free agency - almost all of them sign long term extentions, I can't even name 1 high profile NHL'er who went from arbitration to free-agency in 1 year?
The last one I can think of is Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne when they went to Colorado. That was like 15 years ago and they both did it to get to freee agency 1 year earlier.

Just to clarify my post with regards to Ceci I meant the team takes him down the same path and eventually loses him to UFA after few years of arbitration...
With Hoffman I agree, paying one of their top forwards market value isn't too much to ask, but IMO Hoffman may be looking to recoup value he thinks he is owed from last season and before. He's essentially put up $5M seasons back to back |

I think $4M/yr/5yrs with a $4M signing bonus this year isn't unreasonable given past production... Thats 4.8 AAV with $8M out of the way this year before the other big name forwards come up |

We are all in the same boat, I really trust Dorion - more then the Murray's. I don't trust Melnyk, just like 99.9% of the fanbase.
Melnyk is a clown, but I also think Bryan Murray did a great job of deflecting bad trades he made and screw ups to Melnyk - Kovalev, Alfie, Heatley, Spezza - Melnyk took some heat on all of them.
What owner in the NHL takes as much heat as Melnyk? There has to be a reason for it. In Montreal the owner didn't take any heat for the PK trade, it all fell on the coaches and management.
But when you look at Buffalo, and you look at the residue from the bad contracts here in Ottawa - Cowen, Weircoche, Kovalev, Ryan - it seems to me like a lot of that is on Bryan and Tim - and mostly Tim just because we see the same habits in Buffalo.
I think Dorion seems to be a better Cap manager from our short veiweing then the Murray boys. Imagine we had Cowen, Michalek and Greening on the books this year - goodbye Ceci or Hoffman and no Phaneuf, it would of set our team back 3 years.
And I still think he gets one more really solid bottom pairing Dman to complete the summer. Reading between the lines they want a #6 LD to play 82 games with Wideman, sounds to me like Boro is going to be the fill in guy for injuries and be a team guy. |

There isn't a lot of precedence for how the Sens have managed Hoffman's career thus far. Comparables aren't easy to find either. However, to say that we KNOW that he will be signing multiple years isn't true. There is a certain financial logic that says he doesn't sign for more than a single year. I suppose it is a bit of a gamble, but even if he suffers an injury, there is a chance that he gets offered more than he is being offered by the Sens by some desperate team out there. There aren't a lot of scoring LW out there. |

Unfortunately many quality offensive players have defensive issues. While cap space concerns are always legit it's not like the Sens are facing any type of payroll issue right now with over $14M in cap space. Hoff should be entering his prime and is a valuable commodity. |

That's the thing. The payroll IS the issue. Sens have an internal salary cap. The league cap hit doesn't matter much to the Sens. Sadly. |
