I really hope this is true. Time to take the training wheels off, even if that comes at a price. I've always been high on him.

I think one of the key phrases in Todd's article was "...for now". I don't think Ray is done tinkering. He is waiting to see how other rosters fall out and the salary cap impact. That said, I hope Severson is ready for #2 duties; I think he will do fine.

I think this is why Ray isn't signing one of the leftover UFAs. See what we got in those 2, see if Merrill can actually claim a regular spot, maybe Santini impresses. Theres lots of competition for the last couple spots and while none of them will replace Larsson, neither would Wiz or Jackman.

I don't get it his QO was for $660,000 ($600,000 X 10% increase) He let it expire on Friday and signed for less? Only one year and still 2 way deal. Unless the AHL salary is higher on this contract.

Unless the Devils trade for or sign a veteran defenseman, not only will the team need Severson to play like a quality 1st pairing defenseman with Greene, the Devils will also need one or two of their other young defensemen to be NHL ready this season. Will those defensemen be Santini, Auvitu, Mozik, Jacobs, or Scarlett? So, consider this:

Greene - Severson
Moore - Lovejoy (I would rather see these two as a 3rd pairing)
Merrill - Helgeson (scary, right?)
Extra: one of the above

Or

Auvitu or Mozik - Santini (3rd pairing)
Merrill or Helgeson as the 7th defenseman

I would like to see either Merrill or Helgeson traded away for another defenseman that is in need of a change of scenery similar to the Matteau for Smith-Pelly trade that worked so well for the Devils.

IMO, Santini needs a year of seasoning to acclimate himself to the professional level. Both in terms of quality/speed of play and in length of season. You can ruin a prospect if you rush him, and its not as if he is the difference maker for this team next year, but hopefully the following...
