"Brouwer's numbers have been inflated by the power play - he ranks 49th in PP points over the last three years - and simply being spoon fed a lot of minutes with quality players."

This is the key point. He will spend time with quality players and our PP was atrocious. He may not be ideal but he may help what ailed this team last year. And just about everyone overlays both in term and $'s on free agency, so really, no need for this negative blog. Let's maybe look at the positives and potential of this signing.

I agree with you Todd, but apparently size is what's needed to compete. At 3x3 this would have been a good deal, colborne at 2.5 or less would have been better. I think not being qualified hurt his feelings though. On the bright side this wasn't the worst deal signed yesterday.

Is this the general idea of how the forwards are gonna play out (barring Tkachuck blowing the doors off)?

Gaudreau- Monahan- Brouwer
Shinkaruk- Bennett- Chiasson
Poirier- Backlund- Frolik
Bouma- Stajan- Ferland

Perfect world, it's a year less and a million cheaper. But damn it's an old team now. Brouwer makes for 2 forwards that have hit 30. Guess the Flames should just run with the 2016 draft class for the upcoming season. Thats how all the best teams in the league are built.

The Flames needed a winger with some skill and size to compliment the top six peices they already have. They got a decent one for free and signed him to a reasonable contract. He makes the Flames better.

This is the problem with analytic people. They think anyone who's not a superstar or a 4th line forward 6th defenceman who's doing a little better than expected is overpaid and should be ignored.

Except Colborne didn't add the grit that CGY had been waiting for him to show. Brouwer brings that. If Joe would have shown that same ability to bang and crash like Brouwer, I suspect he would have easily gotten the $3.5 he was looking for.

Well we agree again.

Todd for the life of me how is 30 years old being on the wrong side of 30?????? Seriously. Cmon Todd. I like analytics but this is where you fanatics on this stuff lose me big time. The guy scores 20 goals a year. Why aren't you mentioning that?????? Does that not mean anything in hockey anymore? Was his shooting %'s skewed like Joe Colbornes???? Really, you think Colborne at 2,5Mill is better value but fail to mention his 19% shooting % is a great big regression flag??? Flames Nation analytic writers never had a good thing to say about Colbornes corsi numbers now of all a sudden we made a huge mistake. This blog is out to lunch!

That's a very unimpressive group of forwards, no matter how badly you Jabronis try to over rate them. On a good team you have maybe 3 top 6 forwards, and that includes the wet behind the eats Bennett.

Serious question? If the Devils & Oilers were to for whatever reason decide to do a trade back, you think the Devils would accept Larsson for Hall straight up?

Anayalytics bore the s$&t out of me. I like the way Brouwer plays so I like the signing. A million less would be ideal.

Clearly the Flames have a big need for a right shot RW and this helps fill that deficiency. Add to that, he has a reputation as a leader and popular teammate and he should be fine. That's what July 1 is all about. Fixing glaring problems and paying through the nose to do it.

Chia is not done gutting your ever so impressive group of underachieving high picks. Cut through the poop in your lineup and see what you really got, Richard.

Probably not, but Shero seemed surprised at the reaction. I think this is a case of 90% of fans commenting haven't even seen or paid attention to Larrsons play, and are just assuming he's mediocre because of point totals and the struggles early in his career.

Flames fans spazzed when someone said he was as good a player as Hamilton, but really, all Flames fans see are the offensive numbers and really, truly don't know much about Larrson....same as everyone else.

Ok, you're right, " the Flames forward group is awesome, and way better than the Oilers!"

Wow and the Oilers are that much better off? Maybe you should stick to posting on your own teams thread and frank off.

I realize you asked M.Bone; but based upon Shero' s own words in describing Larsson I would say yes.

If the notion was grounded in reality it would be no.

Shero stole Hall... you know it, I know it, the whole world knows it.

And what I see is it took Hall to get him. Couldn't scratch together more than a third pair d for the great Nuge or Eberle. Reality check.

May not be the most impressive group, but it is much better than last year's lineup. And last year we finished ahead of you...... again. Now we have a solid goalie too se we will see. Can't wait to see all you idiots react when Larsson turns out to be a decent number 3 defender, not Victor Hedman like all you goofs think

The Oilers forwards are streets ahead of the Flames, it's your defence that makes you guys better ( I thought everyone knew this?).

But just for fun, let's do the comparison ( as of right now, no 'potential 'biases) of our top 6's

McDavid > Monohhan
Eberle < Gudreau
Nugent Hopkins > Backlund
Draisaitl > Bennett
Lucic > Frolik
Pouliot < Stajan

And we still have Maroon, Yak, Kassian and Hendricks...while you have Bollig, Bouma and Ferland

Nuge isn't worth (frank) all. Way over paid, fragile third line center. Backlund would bring a better return.

I caught a few Devils games last year. Larsson is good with transition play, but he losses corner battles frequently. Kinda doubt he's any better than Petry..
