I don't know who Sieloff is, but I think the Flames came out like bandits.
Chiasson seems to have regressed from his season in Dallas and this was the guy who was supposed to be the centerpiece of the return Ott got in the Spezza trade. Lets hope he keeps producing
They'll miss the ppg for career defenseman like Sieloff but I think they'll be fine |

Flames won't miss much, by all accounts, Sieloff had been passed in the depth charts by several dmen. I would imagine that would include:
Wotherspoon
Kulak
Andersson
Kylington
Morrison
Culkin
Really, it amounts to a very minor deal for both sides, but one is an NHL'er and might one day take some 6-7th dman minutes |

A whole blog on Alex Chiasson ... this is the most attention he will get for the rest of his career. I am betting he is a healthy scratch more often than not.

Ill take you up on that bet. He was a half point per game under Gulu in Dallas so there is potential there.

Meh... this is a "I know a guy.." from the new coach.
One year deal, $800k. Non-factor overall including risk. Saves airline fees by not bringing in some KHL "star"...

- 6'4"
- 208 lb
- RW with a right shot
- played 77 NHL games last season
- 239 total NHL games under his belt
- that will be 26 yrs old this year
- signed a $800,000 contract to play this year (which is a pay cut from what he got last year)
- He has played for our new head coach before (And he did well under the his direction)
All sounds like a very good low risk move that potentially fills the need for size and right wingers. This is also a good deal when you realize the player the Flames gave up in the deal was getting buried behind other up incoming defensive prospects.
I like the deal and hopefully this guy can help spark some offense within the bottom 6. |

Cheap, solid depth in the bottom six is how you compete. Great trade. Hopefully limits the amount of Stajan, Bollig, Bouma etc. |

Chiasson is an NHL player, no speed at all, not a useless player but he can't start plays and get the puck off his wing into the middle of the ice. He thinks of himself as a finisher, his best game is when he is just mucking around the net, within 10 feet of the net he has good hands.
But don't expect him to hit anybody or be involved emotionally - he's a player who thinks of himself as a scorer and plays like it, even though he'll only get 10 goals this year, in his mind he scores 40 a year.

Nick Paul was the centerpiece of hte spezza trade, chiasson was a roster player who was able to step in and fill the empty roster spot.
chiasson is, at best, an average 4th line player. he has the physical tools but the hockey IQ of george laracque. hopefully he can be rejuvinated in cgy but to say the flames made out like bandits is ridiculous. the guy put up a wopping 40pts in over 150 games (which included tons of time on the 2nd PP unit)......he's not a very good hockey player. |

this
both guys seem like fringe NHLers at best who both teams are hoping can step up with a fresh start.
i imagine neither player will make any impact on their NHL clubs at all |

fills the farm ranks, and evens out the players in each position.
looks more like a house cleaning move |

i agree. ottawa wasn't going to qualify chiasson this year (i think they did just so they could trade him) and i doubt cgy would have qualified sieroff next year......seems like both teams getting something for players that they likely would have lost for nothing. |
|
|
|
exactly...both guys get another shot
Fans always rip guys when they get traded from their team...like an exgf that kicked their ass to the curb.
Calgary has more need for a bottom six winger and the Sens have more need for depth on D. |

Well the other guy isn't even an established NHLer. Chiasson is still the better player.
Laraque was a pretty useful player
Nick Paul? who is that

nice of the Sens to play their 4th liners on the PP

saying chiasson is better than sieroff is like saying beavis is smarter than butthead.....neither one is a useful player. chiasson played more NHL games for the simple fact that ottawa had a crap ton of injuries to their forwards last year and didn't want to rush prospects who weren't NHL ready. If the sens hadn't lost turris, macarthur, etc, then chiasson would have been a healthy scratch on a regular basis.
laracque was a useful enforcer, but had the hockey IQ of a (frank)ing tree stump......which was my point.
Nick Paul is one of our prospects, and the best asset we got out of the Spezza deal.............you should try reading, it helps when responding to posts. |

you watch him for an entire year and we'll have this conversation again.
side note - the train wreck on Ottawa's special teams (chiasson on the PP was part of that) was one of the main reasons the coach got canned.......just saying. |

What does everyone think about just letting Joe Colborne walk, I think he's going to be looking for a Stajan like contract and I think the $ could be better spent on a player like Okoposo? |

Offer him 2.5 mil as an absolute max. if he takes it then great. If not then I am sorry to see him go, but there are other more critical areas where that money needs to be assigned.
That is the unfortunate business side of things. If he took it on a 1 year deal, then should he provide similar numbers there is much more chance of a raise for him next season once a lot of those unfavorable contracts are gone from the books. It just isn't there this season. |
