Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks: Olli Juolevi Not AHL-Eligible, Higgins to be Bought Out? As the dust settles from the 2016 draft, we learn that first-round pick Olli Juolevi is not eligible to play in the AHL next year, and that Chris Higgins is a likely buyout target before the window ends next week.

Thank you for the clarification on the AHL for next season. I dont like that rule but in this case I prefer him to get another year with London.

I was pretty caught off guard initially just because of how the Jackets passed on JP. I am glad the praise Juolevi gets seems to be common from multiple sources. Solid pick.

Moving forward I wonder what happens in regards to Philip Larsen and the plan is to sign him still. Whether he plays in the AHL or not is unknown so I'm hoping he is willing to sign a two way contract.

I think everyone needs to keep in mind that not only has JB brought in many new faces but he has also helped both of those teams in a big way. He basically signed and drafted himself so very decent goaltending and defenseman for both teams and we can only hope the competition is healthy for both teams as well.

I'm excited to see how Utica does as well with Demko and Garten battling it out. Even if Juolevi has to go back to the OHL I'm sure he has a good camp and has a positive experience to take back there with him.

As for Burrows, I'm happy they are letting him play his last year out and it is always good to have depth incase injuries are an issue again next year.

All we need is a couple FA's. I really hope we end up with someone a but gritty like McGinn or Martin. Lucic may not be well liked but he would no doubt help protect the Sedins and not let people get pushed around as much. I still like Okposo but he may be hard to convince to come here. Eriksson is anot her good option but he's alot softer than the other two options. Can we afford to bring in another guy that will need protection? It could work out and hopefully JB brings in the right fits going forward without giving them ridiculous term.

How would people feel about 6 years of term with NMC protection for 2 years just to say they can be protected from LV but then have it move to a limited NTC thereafter. I would think that may be some kind of stipulation for guys to sign.

I have a confession.

I realized yesterday, whoever was saying Chiapet was talking about Chiarelli....

I had thought it was Burke with his crazy hair

It's nice to see the kid has confidence in himself, as that will help him with the transition to the pros. That said, I don't think there is much of a chance that he makes the team this year - I would be all for him having another OHL season under his belt, which would also hopefully allow him to bulk up a little more and further work on his skills.

If he does make the team, however, I think this would have to be a very rare situation (and unlikely the Canucks have dealt with anything like this in the past). Anyone know if there is any precedent in terms of having a seventeen year old make it straight out of junior? (when is Juolevi's birthday?)

I was hoping the Canucks took Tkachuk so the flames picked up Juolevi. He's going to be great!!

There's no way Finland wins the u18 and London Knights win the memorial cup without Juolevi. If Defence wasn't important the Oilers would be cup contenders every year.

Yeah, agreed it's nice that he seems confident and self assured, but no way he makes the bigs this year. It would be counter intuitive for him to say he really wants to go back to the OHL again and win another memorial cup. lol

Unlike JV, this kid needs to marinate a bit and fill out more.

I guess I am obsessed with BB's hair and tie deployment...

and totally acknowledge Chiapet is a good/great nick name for Chiarelli, utilizing both his first and last name, but BB actually looks like he has an epic chiapet stuck to the top of his head. I am sure Trump is jealous of BB's coif.

anyway, feck'em all and their personal hair stylists.

Absolutely - especially given the position he plays which is arguably the hardest in hockey (other than goaltending of course). Hopefully the Canucks will have him on an extensive conditioning and training regimen so he can fill out his frame further. I don't see him making an impact until two to three years from now (makes it that much more remarkable that JV made the team at such a young age)

After seeing the way he dominated a 19 year old tournament I suspect he can make an impact next year. He just needs to work on his offense in London for a season and add 15 pounds

Base jumper dies in Squamish after parachute fails to open. I guess that answers my wife's question. Not sure if he died of a heart attack or impact though

In all fairness, Carol should set up a hotline for people's lives that have been ruined by lost draft picks and missed SEL prospects

I'm a patient guy, haven't spoke to the guy in a while, same story though, he is fighting everyone else's and his own battles.

My mom called me right after to update me on everything that is happening in her life. she said something about having to go to Saanich for a wake/life celebration and a hotel charging $400 a night where as they often stay there at $100 a night, I guess off season.

I do prefer the hockey talk.
