For experienced campaigners, the current men in charge seem to be playing this with no set plan. Fair enough players like Panarin are just freaks that you can't predict will break the bank, but I would have thought there's plans D, E, & F ready to roll for 'Justin'.
In saying that, even the Saad trade, & the Sharp debacle are events that should have people concerned about how water tight the dinghy is?? It just looks like they don't know, & to say you don't know what a trade will return ok, you prepare for the worst & the best. You have a plan for at least the cap, the ability of the team you ice is harder to prepare for.
An example would be, who do they have in mind for the LW position? How much are they putting aside to fill that gap, or which player is being promoted until they have to replace him (& how much are they putting aside?)?
Edit:'Justin - just in case' |

I have a hard time believing the Hawks are "done" this offseason. Rolling into the season with several open spots filled by Rockford guys will hurt this team. And as you mentioned the Panarin signing will be something to watch. If they can free up $3-4M, then I think we could agree there is a bit more cushion and room to tweak the roster. |

JJ anything more on Crawford? The way I see it is they have to move him this year because next year it will be impossible - with the expansion draft goalies being available and being forced to protect Crow with his NMC over Darling. Also, any confirmation (aside from Grosso and your previous more vague conversation that Crow would cooperate)?
Thanks again for sharing what you can and keeping the conversation moving.
EDIT: any confirmation...that Crow was asked to waive to go to CAL? |

John Jaeckel: The Meaning Of "We" - John Jaeckel
Moving Crawford before next summer is the key to keeping Panarin.
If they can move him now but use 4-5M to sign Ladd (if he will take that) or another 1LW they are right back in the same boat next summer. |

If we can't afford Ladd/Brouwer, maybe try and ink McGinn at $3.25-3.5M? Ladd or Brouwer will cost at minimum $4-4.5M. |

Tough one for sure Mr. P. One's gotta logically put the pieces together and conclude Bowman is NOT comfortable where he is sitting with the cap and roster. Especially if your superstars are asking for a $6M winger..

Wonder if they throw one of those 2nd round picks to the Oil for a guy like Yak? Or do they throw a 2nd in trying to move Kruger? Dont know, but Stan cannot be done. |

Agree. Don't think they are done at all. May or may not make a move today though. I do like that as JJ said Stan is more proactive this year. He does seem to be ahead of the curve and I do think he is executing on plans (and counter plans / options). There is today for moves and then July 1 as the next obvious deadline. After that the longer he goes the uglier it will get as his back moves closer to the wall and the options diminish. I hope the trend of doing things sooner than later continues. |

I guess Montreal felt bad about the Weise/Fleishman trade not working out when giving two seconds for Shaw's rights. If they are moving CC it needs to be done ASAP. Recent trades have taken Toronto and Calgary out of the list of teams looking for #1 goalies, so if they wait much longer they won't get much for CC. |

Stan has plenty of work to do. McNeill and Garrett Ross need a QO or does he trade them off for more picks or as part of a bigger package. Either way that doesn't help with salary cap matters.
I'm curious about Marcus Johansson after the Caps acquired Lars Eller. Could they move AA somewhere and acquire the younger Johansson and sign him?

If the Red Wings are able to trade Datsyuk's contract after he retires to play in the KHL, could the Hawks trade Hossa's contract to avoid the recapture penalty?
Edit: assuming he retires before the end of his contract. |

Good stuff, JJ! Just one minor correction: the Hawks lost to the Blues in seven games (not that it influenced the outcome). |

QOs would buy time if he needed it, but at this point if you liked McNeil and Ross they would have already played bigger roles so you would think they'd look for some ROI?
With respect to AA IMO you keep the relatively inexpensive 2C you tried for years to sign (they specially sought out AA), who your star wingers love to play with and who speaks Russian. That is all contingent on you not HAVING no other choice or a crazy good offer. |

Thanks, beat me to it. My math skills are pretty limited too but I can count to seven and I was pretty sure that's how many games were played. |

Nicely done JJ.
That was well laid out.
I think Stan has to work quickly here removing money.
Then extremely smart and slower adding it back in.
Seems like there are usually bargains later in the FA process |

I'm with you. Especially with Shaw gone, he's one of the few guys that knows exactly where the front of the net is and does a great job making it difficult for the opposing goalie to see the puck. |

Might be time to trade the elephant contract in Hossa. As much as we Hawks fans love having him. His contract hit is terrible. Will be hard to find a decent replacement for him but better now than later Take the penalty for his contract and move on. |

Nice blog. Probably just at typo but Hawks lost to STL in 7 games. Not six. |
