The only buyout that makes sense to me is greening.

4 more years of lupul with a $3M caphit next year sucks.

Buying out bernier still leaves $2.6M on the books. Might as well dump him in the ahl and get a $1M of savings this year …. Be free and clear next year.

It's been decided already he'll do the Leafs a favour and retire when we ask him to. Vinny-esque

Buyouts do not make sense to me for a team that isn't quite ready to really compete. You want to get those contract done sooner so you have money to sign your youth when it's rfa. Retain or just waiting makes far more sense to me. Especially you want any bout hits off your cap when you need to sign Matthews post elc

We only need to buyout IF Stammer wants to play for us...maybe not even then.

Agreed.i don't even know if greening is worthwhile. He played well for the leafs last year.

lupul is movable because unlike horton he is still insurable

a team looking to get to cap floor might be willing to give up a project prospect or a mid round pick

if lupul stays healthy its a win for the team as he still has value as an offensive winger

if he does get hurt then insurance would cover his salary while still allowing his hit to count against the cap

someone will take him

keep greening and laich for one more year while the kids that arent quite there yet play with the marlies

most of the youth will be on entry level deals and those two will be long gone before their second contracts come up

I hear ya.

The one that make makes the most sense is a lupul buyout next year imo.

The nhl insurance policy only covers 80% of salary. Not sure a budget team would be happy being on the hook for 20% of lupul’s remaining salary.

You will never know what Lou has up his sleeve.
All of his deals come out of left field with no prior buzz or hints that they are coming.
When he was hired there were a lot of negative comments but he is very professional and shrewd.
Does anyone really know if Stamkos fits Lou's vision for the Leafs?
You won't know until it happens and all the speculation is just that where Lou is concerned.

i just dont think buyouts are necessary

i do think they can move lupul and bozak... might have to pay to do it but its possible

greening and laich make up 2/3rds of a solid third line... allowing a young guy who the leafs project to be in that role play with them... which could give a young winger a lot of knowledge about playing in a checking role

so they pay a million to get a 5+ million cap hit

thats exactly what a budget team wants
