Nice try trying to beat tsn to it, Deger said Detroit is in the lead for Stamkos.

I can't think of a good reason why Stamkos would go to Detroit. They won't be able to offer him any more money and Tampa is closer to a cup. I get all the reports etc, but it doesn't make sense to me. Unless he's really just done with Tampa and all the things he's been saying are lip service to the media, which hey, these guys have to do. At least I can rationalize Toronto with the hometown team etc, (though they couldn't be further from a cup). At the end of the day though, it is fun. I really hope he goes UFA, if for no other reason that entertainment.

Trading his rights and Tampa may resign him? I guess one CAN actually make this stuff up.

so i have this straight... Stamkos' rights could be moved, but they could not be moved, and if they are moved, he could sign with the team that acquires his rights but he could also sign with any of the other 29 teams, including Tampa.

so all we have ruled out at this point is retirement.

the impressive thing is that he's made up nothing and makes it sound like something.

Unbelievable.

From my sources, he's done with Tampa and his mind on where he wants to play next is 80-90% made up.

Key word (as always) is COULD. Sure they could, Could the Leafs trade #1?? You can basically say anything if you start of saying Could.

I think Stamkos signs with Toronto. I'm not trying to be biased towards it or anything.

But also for the record he's done in Tampa...I don't know why Ek keeps trying to say Tampa is his number 1 choice. But hey Malkin is getting traded too apperently

Thin foil hat theory would be Yzerman still works undercover for the Red Wings

This could also happen:

TBY trades Stamkos rights, Stamkos tests FA, Stamkos resigns with TBY for 1 year and this repeats next year
Slimy Steve Yzerman walks away with some draft picks

Who cares?

What about Malkin?

What's going on with the Flyers?

How come you never talk about these things?

I think Stamkos just wants to cash in long term. As would any FA.

Hopefully some team trades for the right to talk to him before he is a free agent. And the Lightning get a pick and then resign him.

Somehow I see the Bolts making out like bandits here, trading Stamkos' exclusive negotiating rights for like a third round pick and then he resigns for a hometown discount.

Especially considering one bad injury (or blood clot!) and his career would be done.
No elite player will take that risk nowadays, imo.

The final Cap # will influence his decision. He may want to wait until next year to try to cash in bigger if the cap goes down or remains flat. Doubt it though. He will likely want the sure thing.
