Don't bother with Lupul. With the expansion potentially requiring players with a minimum games played signed into 2017-18 he is so much more valuable on the roster next year.

Here is what I have found for the Leafs during expansion.

With Horton not needed to be protected and with Nylander exempt, we are gonna lose virtually no one.

The 40/70 games played rule is interesting but doable. You have to make available two forwards and one defenseman that played 40 games in 2016-17 or 70 games in the last two years. But they must be signed into 2017-18.

Lupul needs to play 24 games (doable) and then one more forward and defenseman needs to be signed for two seasons. Froese and one of Marincin or Corrado will work or any free agent ala a Winnik type signing.

After that we can protect anyone we want.

Forwards: JVR, Kadri, Komarov, Brown, Leipsic, Leivo, Bozak (with Colin Smith left over).

Defense: Reilly, Gardiner, Carrick (with Percy left over)

Goalie: Sparks (with Bibeau left over)

Which means we will lose ONLY ONE of Smith, Percy, or Bibeau (assuming we do not trade one prior). Lupul may end up being the best choice from us for his lower cash contract compared to cap hit and if he doesn't play insurance takes over anyway. HUGE WIN FOR TORONTO!!

End book.

How bad must Cowan be if the team with the worst overall defence in the league can't use him?

Were looking good for the expansion draft this time but the 32 team expansion (quebec or Seattle) is gunna hurt.

Teams like SJ Chicago STL with insanely good veteran Defensive depth and veteran forward depth are the only ones who have to worry. There's a good chance a player like Percy wouldn't even be thought of being picked

Tyler Biggs and Stuart Percy.

What a waste of 2 first round picks.

No kidding.

Those picks to Anaheim for Biggs turned out to be Rakell and Gibson... And here we are searching for our future tender.

I believe it has something to do with his health, when he got to the Leafs it was reported that they were concerned about his hips and that they were going to work him out with the training staff to try and get him game ready, next thing you know he's cut

STL can protect Pietrangelo, Bouwmeester, & Edmundson. Parayko is too young to count. Shattenkirk will be a week from UFA status; can wait to extend him until after draft. It's pretty much the same story with forwards. Fabbri too young, Steen & Berglund about to hit UFA... Blues will end up losing a #6 defenseman or 4th liner.

When you consider most teams having at least a few good players on expiring contracts, and a couple young guys; the expansion team will be ok for goalies and otherwise screwed. Team full of bottom pairing defensemen and 4th liners. So bad, they probably only have a 50% chance of making playoffs before Oilers.
