"Soon" as in July 1st, or "soon" as in the Leafs trade for Stammer's rights in advance of free agency?

Stamkos
Barrie
Vesey
Fleury

Add all those pieces, maybe a couple more, and they'll be competing for a playoff spot next season

I think that they attempt to trade for his rights. I know the whole "why buy the cow when you get the milk for free" thing. I feel that Stamkos is on his way out for a variety of reasons. He is their captain & he accomplished a lot in TB tho. I think that it's a classy move for both organizations to try to work out some sort of reasonable deal for his rights. Especially if everyone is sure that a contract with the Leafs is inevitable. It will take the heat off of Stamkos a bit too. He'll look less like he abandoned the Lightning fans & team if a trade is worked out as opposed to him just walking as a free agent.

I can't imagine getting fired from somewhere & then years later finding myself getting hired for my old position by the same guy who previously fired me. That relationship has disaster written all over it in my opinion.

That's crap, Leafs should not trade for Stammers rights! They owe Tampa nothing and neither does Stammer.........come July 1st he signs with any team he chooses and absolutely NO toes have been stepped on..........if he goes to Toronto or another team it's solely because Tampa chose to go a different direction......no team can afford to keep everyone in the salary cap era.

The poor Ducks...

Mike seems to fall into the pit that a lot of people did when it comes to the Leafs problems. It was not A. The Coach OR B. The Players. It was both! The roster was poorly put together and the wrong group and the coach wasn't good. Carlyle being fired doesn't mean the roster wasn't at fault nor does the roster getting dismantled take any responsibility away from Carlyle.

The Ducks are screwed. Unless Carlyle has reinvented himself since being fired, they are in real trouble.

I think you overate the importance of optics in business decisions.

Keeping Stamkos is going to be very hard for Tampa. It means having to move at least one big salary this year (Callahan or Carle) and moving another big salary next summer in order to provide contract space for Hedman. In addition, they have some really good players also looking for contracts this year.

The easiest solution for Tampa is simply to let Stamkos go. The best solution may be to deal him for the best return under the circumstances.

Florida has dumped enough salary to suggest they may have the inside position on Stamkos. They have moved Gudbranson to Vancouver and Savard (LTIR). Intrigued by the rumour that Florida will offer up Huberdeau for rights to negotiate with Stamkos. If Florida gets the negotiation rights they know they can sign him. Nobody should discount the financial impact of being able to offer a contract that us free from state income tax.

I'm not sure Stamkos gets traded. Newport Sports is known to be pretty thorough and will want to present Stamkos with as many options as possible. That really doesn't give a team that much advantage in buying negotiating rights for a couple of weeks. I think Stamkos plays out for a while.

If Stammer is available, you sign him. Yes, he is a huge cap hit, but this could very well be our captain for years to come, who is also ELITE with playoff experience. Hard to come by a 26 year old in his prime that is elite. No need to trade for his rights though. At the same time, stay the course and obtain a stop gap goalie without a ridiculous 5-6 million cap hit.

What would it take to pry Gibson away from Anaheim? I think this is the guy we should target, which falls right in line with our development of prospects. It seems as though we have had some pretty good luck trading with them. Remember Lupul was a cap dump on the Gardiner deal? He actually did have value at one point as we signed him to a ludicrous contract. Now? Ugh....but still, we didn't expect him to do anything. It was Gards who we were after.

Stay the course Lou!!! For the love of god...... let's do it right this time!!!!
