All scouts can do project how a kid's game will translate to the next level. A lot of busts in professional sports occur because they are not mentally mature enough. No real analytics to gage a player's heart, work ethic, and overall attitude.

Obviously "depth" is impossible to predict. I think a minimum of 160 NHL games played makes the pick a success.

Welcome to draft day where everyone has an opinion, no one truly knows what to expect and every prospect will be overly hyped as the next superstar by Regis.

Hard to say unless you take it round by round. To be considered a successful draft pick, my expectations would be:

Top 10 overall pick: Becomes at least an above average NHL player, if not a star.

the rest of the first round: Becomes a solid NHL regular

2nd round: Becomes a legit NHL player

3rd round: plays 100 or more NHL games

4th-7th round: plays in the NHL at all.

Some, definitely fell into this category.

Most busts, however, seem to be teams gambling big on tools and hoping hockey sense/creativity/competitiveness 'develop'.

Some of those mid-90s drafts are just horrible. A few names here and there, but a lot more misses than hits.

I think they need to have a Work Ethic For % of at least 60.5 if they want to go in the top-10.

if the flyers were to trade MDZ, what do you think the return would possibly be?

Hard to say, depends a lot on how thin the other team is on D and how badly they want him.

I think there's some gray area there. If you're drafting at the back end of both rounds (20+/50+) that's probably fair. But if you have 2 1sts and draft early in the second, you're hoping that all 3 make it.

I think MDZ is a player where the return will never equal his value on the team.

Most likely. Same with Mason. Better off just keeping them. I'd like to re-sign MDZ long term
