Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Eight Flyers to World Cup, Howe, Memorial Cup & More - bmeltzer
I'm really happy for all of our players who made it, especially our Captain. Lately in terms of international Hockey, I don't want him put on the same scale as Marc Savard when Savard was still an active player. Good first line center, just not good enough.
Does it bother anyone else that Joe Thornton is going into a Stanley Cup Final not wearing the "C" for the Sharks? |

North America is like Star Trek, any older people get sent away to die.

Curious if all people crying about the player involvement in the Olympics will cry about this sack of poop tournament. |

I would prefer there be no tournament but since there is, I would be upset if G got snubbed again. |

I went to 2 games of that playoff run;
Game 5 against the Islanders, which they lost, I had 3rd row seats and I caught a puck in the final 2 minutes of the game. It actually landed on the back of the guy in front of me from a wraparound that lipped out. (Can't happen anymore with the netting)
Then, Game 7. AWESOME! The single best sporting event I have been to. I got there early and people were screaming at the top of their lungs during the 20 minute warm up skate, it was electric! When the game started, the Isles were immediately called for a penalty because the starting line up they gave to the refs were not the five players that took the ice for the opening face off (I didn't even know that was a thing...). When the Flyers scored on that power play, the route was on. It was a great day |

Weird that PEB made the team....looking at the other forwards he is definitely a little out of place. You'd think Raffl would be a much better addition than PEB. (Or others)
I could totally see them trying to go for Team European Diversity though to make up for this unholy European Union. Vanek is an Austrian on the team already. Get a Frenchie in there to bring a little zest! |

Just spitballing but I think it was about diversity of roles, as opposed to countries. Kinda like why Coots made his team. (there was an article somewhere a while ago telling how Scotty Bowman told Stan to make sure he added Coots to the team because he needed the best 2-way center as opposed to a better offense only center) PEB is probably looked at as a better defensive forward whereas Raffle is clearly a better two way canter. |

There is not an area of the game PEB is better than Raffl at though. Defensively or offensively. It would not shock me if they wanted to select as many countries as possible, and selecting PEB was not about diversity of roles but diversity of nationality. He is most likely the 13th forward anyway. Plus he was at this year's WC and did a respectable job, which probably helped in terms of recency. |

I agree that Raffle is better either way. I guess it's a bit more political that I thought... Either way, I really like PEB and am happy for the guy |

Raffl is a natural winger, the roster has plenty of wingers. Bellemare is a center. I do agree, country diversity is a factor |

So many fans look at is if it's an all star team. Need players to fill roles.
