seriously you put the own goal as the link - so many great Chris Phillips plays and memories and this is what you choose to put out there.

guy was a trooper for ottawa for a long time.....game regressed a little towards the end but i'll always remember phillips and volchenkov as one of the premier shutdown pairings in the NHL in the mid 00's.

always funny when you think of him as a #1 overall pick.....but when you actually look back through that draft......he's probably one of the 3-4 best players of that draft. the only players i'd say with absolute certainty are better than him (for their whole careers) from that draft are Briere and Chara.

His on-ice accolades mentioned in the article, his leadership on the team, his longevity, his class, not to mention his involvement in the community all point towards a special send off for a great player.

I would think it will be a no brainer for the organization to retire #4.

Always nice to see a player retire having played only in one jersey (even if it's a Sens jersey).

I don't think he ever reached the potential that people had hoped, but he was a good d-man for us. Was always overshadowed by more flashy guys like Redden, Chara, Karlsson, Volchencov, even Kravchuck back in the day. He'll have his jersey retired after Alfies's in raised to the rafters. Nice to see this organization have the opportunity to finally retire a couple of numbers.

I would definitely rate #4 higher than A-Train, or Igor

^^^

I think he's refering to the fact tht Anton was more flashy. He was the league leading shot blocker and could lay out a big hit. The two working together were pretty awesome, they were a big part of the defense when the team went to the finals.

His performance the past 4-5 years has sort of overshadowed his performance in the early 2000's. He was a guy who quietly went about doing his job. Sure you'd like more of a 'star' player with a first overall, but solid stay at home guys are pretty valuable in their own right, and I think #4 will go up to the rafters for his community work, dedication to the franchise, combined with his long years of on ice work.

I may have campaigned for him to be off the ice rather than on in the past couple years, but that doesn't take away what he did in his prime.

Cheers to #4.

The fact you called Volchenkov A-Train proves my point. He was way more noticeable out there with his hits and zillion blocked shots. Remember I said flashy, not better. Phillips did his job quietly and probably never really got the full accolades he deserved.

It's best to ignore. I reread the blog like 4 times to see what he was talking about.

this was the only thing i could find

"While he had many rocky moments, including some memorable "own goals" in his time with the Senators,"

not sure it's a link, but clearly it's referencing the goal in the finals. not sure why tuna has an issue with it thought....like it or not, it is one of the things he'll be remembered for. it's one of a small number of blemishes in an otherwise very good career

i think in his prime volchenkov was a better player (still one of my top 3 fav sens of all time, got his jersey at home).....it's just that due to the style he played, his prime didn't last nearly as long as big rig.

Chris Phillips was a solid top 4 Dman in his prime, very solid in his own end and very popular among his team mates. His image as a team guy is very strong. In some ways his reputation suffered by his being taken #1 overall. He never had the wheels to provide strong offensive support and in today's world of evaluation and development he probably would have been scouted as a strong second round pick.

But he has been a great community guy, respected by most everyone and another add to the growing number of Senator alumni that maintain full time residence in Ottawa and remain a part of the sports scene.

With Wiercioche not being resigned and Phillips retiring, we get a some insight into the decision to trade for Phaneuf and the flexibility to sign Ceci to a long term deal.

Think he should be working with our young blueliners ,Philly knew defense, and was one of the better board playing dmen in the league during his better years.Donovan did wonders for Zsmith, thinking Philly still has something to give in this exact same role

Add in the uncertainty of us possibly losing Methot in a expansion draft, and it makes complete sense. It also buys a bit of development time for his eventual replacement in Chabot

To me, it's money that can be used to get a decent 5/6 guy. A Boro/Wideman pair can't happen again unless they have improve their game immensely. I think Wideman can maybe pull out a respectable season, but to me an upgrade on Boro is needed. I love his effort and toughness, but he just doesn't seem to be consistent enough out there. Especially if you're going to put him on the penalty kill.
