So that means Puljijarvi is taken 3rd overall by Columbus and turns into a gem whilst Laine turns into a bust/average player?

Canucks and bad drafting lol? yep it was pretty bad. Now, ironically, the draft seems like our only strength. cause I'm not sure asset management is.

I count 6 Hall of Fame players that Jets 1.0 passed on.
Goulet, Savard, Neely, Leetch, Forsberg, Brodeur (he will be there)

anyone hearing any rumours or gossip that Columbus would consider trading up to get Laine at 2? I really like Pulijarvi, so getting him and something else from Columbus looks pretty damm good to me

Only way I would trade down is if Columbus is offering Seth Jones as part of the package to do so. I love Laine's game and unless I am hearing of a franchise forward or defenseman coming back in the trade will I do that.

I didn't forget, it is far too early to pass judgement on this.

well that will never happen. I like Puljujarvi, by all accounts he is a more well rounded player, smarter, faster and less off ice / character risk. It's like who'd you rather Patrick Kane or Toews? i take toews all day even though he will never score as many goals as Patty Kane

Hot Take...drafting in the 80s and 90s were more of a crap shoot compared to what it is today

For some teams definitely and thats why it will be fun to look at 90s and 00s and see how things change.

I have some other thoughts about this that might be interesting to discuss too.

Pistol Pete - for what it's worth - I met Ric Nattress not too long ago and we were talking about the Jets back in the day ... how tough it was with the Oilers and, at least one year, the Flames in our division ... he spelled it our for me ... we had one big problem:

E-S-S-E-N-S-A

Now, he was more towards the late 80's early 90's but - hey - it was fu_kin Nattress !

Without a doubt, the Jets never had a quality goalie in the days when they were close to beating the Flames and Oilers. Not just Essensa, all of the others too.

One of my pastimes is going through all the drafts on Wiki. You really notice how much better the drafting is today. Also, you really see what attributes in a player are values nowadays versus in the 1980s. Jim Kyte at 12th.. seriously!?

completely different players. Sheifele will put up more points and Couturier will be a better shut down center

On a diff team, Couturier might blossom into a point producer.

@Grinder - Nobody ever could figure out how Jets 1.0 scouted or drafted.
I remember the 1st time I saw Ryan Stewart (1985 1st rounder) in an exhibition game with the Jets. He could not skate at anything near a pro level. Played 3 NHL games and that was it. How could a scout not notice the skating weakness ?
